CLINTON — Covington came out strongly on Monday night in the second semifinal match of the South Vermillion boys’ soccer sectional, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes and never trailing in defeating Greencastle 6-1.

The Trojans led 3-0 at halftime, before Evan Crowe scored in the second half to cut the deficit to two goals.

The Tiger Cubs were shut out the remainder of the match.

“We did not go out as hard as Covington did in the first half,” Greencastle coach J.D. Sims said. “We let three goals by in a matter of 12 minutes.”

Last month, Greencastle had won nine straight matches going in to the conference championship match before losing 4-1 to Edgewood.

The Tiger Cubs lost their last three matches of the season after that point.

“Fatigue caught up with us, and I think losing conference hurt the boys mentally,” Sims said. “We started making costly errors in the back of the field and our positioning started to fall apart these past few games.”

Despite the premature end to the season, Sims was pleased with how well his team played and has a lot of optimism for the future.

“Overall the boys had a great season, and played some really good soccer,” he said. “Our ball movement was very impressive a large part of the season and we had some great wins.

“We are only losing two seniors this year, so we can build on what we have done this year.”
