Mason Asher of North Putnam carded a 72 in the final round of the Wabash College Fall Golf Classic to earn a spot on the all-tournament team with a two-round total of 150 for a fifth-place finish.

Asher scored a 78 in the first round Saturday before dropping seven strokes Sunday. His effort helped Wabash finish third out of the four competing teams.

Wabash finished with a team score of 644 (321-323). Franklin College won the tournament with a score of 593 (294-299). Defiance finished second with a team score of 613 (301-312), while Berea turned in a score of 648 (330-318) to place fourth.

The tournament was the final event of the fall season for the Little Giants.

New Mexico near top again — Coached by Greencastle native Joe Franklin, the New Mexico Lobos women’s cross country team is again among the nation’s best.

The Lobo women, ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA National Coaches’ Poll for the 10th-straight poll, return many tremendous runners and have again reloaded, while the youthful UNM men are primed to regain their place among the nation’s best.

New Mexico had its first shot on the road toward the NCAAs last weekend at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.

“The goals have never changed: To be top 10,” Franklin said before the season. “That was the expectation in 2007 when I was hired and that’s never changed.”

Last year was the culmination of those goals, as the New Mexico women stormed to one of the most dominant performances ever witnessed in NCAA history.

The Lobos recorded the lowest team score at the NCAA Championships since 1982 behind five All-Americans — the most by one team at a single championship since 2009.

It was New Mexico’s sixth-straight top-five finish at the NCAAs, showing how much the Lobo women have bought into Franklin’s goals.

Monnett honored again by NCAC – Senior Claudia Monnett of Cloverdale was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Runners of the Week following her performances last month in a dual meet at Rose-Hulman.

Last weekend, Monnett again led the Tigers by placing seventh in the Greater Louisville Classic.

Monnett paced the Tigers in 21:42.83 on the 6,000-meter course, followed by Lois Miller in 40th in 23:04.14 and Emma MacAnally in 67th in 23:31.84.

Rounding out the Tigers’ runners were Haley Thompson (24:09.77), Grace Cook (24:24.86) and Megan Davis (24:27.95).

DePauw returns to action on Oct. 15, when it competes in the Inter-Region Rumble at Oberlin.

DePauw’s Hunt honored again — For the second week in a row, Matt Hunt was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Hunt (a graduate of Heritage Christian) totaled 396 yards of total offense and accounted for all six of the Tigers’ touchdowns leading to a 48-35 victory over Kenyon. Hunt completed 18-of-30 pass attempts for 237 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 16 times for 159 rushing yards and two more touchdowns.

For the season, Hunt has completed 66.7 percent of his passes (112-of-168) for 1,168 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has 60 carries for 433 yards and five rushing touchdowns.

DePauw is 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC. They travel to co-leader Wittenberg on Saturday.

Moore also honored — E.J. Moore lifted the Tigers to two thrilling wins last week, earning him North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.

Moore, of Indianapolis Cathedral, made two starts and scored two goals, including the game-winner against Thomas More with :00.8 left.

on the clock to give DePauw a 1-0 victory.

On Saturday, the Tigers knocked off No. 2 Kenyon 2-1 as Moore opened up the scoring with his third goal of the season in the 34th minute.
