PREP ROUNDUP: Greencastle spikers top SP; Clovers defeat Eels

Greencastle’s volleyball team closed out its Western Indiana Conference schedule on Thursday night by defeating South Putnam 25-11, 25-13 and 25-15 to finish 3-2 in league play.

The match took a backseat on the night to the “Volley for the Cure” fundraiser and other special activities to support breast cancer awareness.

The host Eagles wore pink uniforms and had several special activities to raise money.

The Eagles also honored Sabrina Phillips and Ashley Schroer on senior night.

“It was an honor recognizing our seniors,” Custis said. “Sabrina and Ashley have been a great addition to the team and are all-around great role models.”

In other volleyball:

Riverton Parke 3, Cloverdale 0 — The Clovers with a crowd of pink supporters lost to Riverton Parke by the scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 20-25 on Thursday.

The evening was full of special moments as the Clovers not only played in pink for breast cancer awareness but also raised funds to help a former student who is currently fighting cancer.

In addition the Clovers celebrated senior night by honoring Lauren Meek and Payten Simpson.

Serving — Hannah Rady 8 points and 1 ace, Kenzie Stoltz 8 points and 4 aces, Payten Simpson with 5 points and Hailey Thomas and Justyce Monnett with 2 each.

Coach Kathy Moore said, “It was a special night for us, it’s so exciting to fill the gym with fans wearing pink, having the pep band and a wonderful cheer block supporting us, the team played their hearts out.”

Moore was also happy that her seniors got a good sendoff.

“I know the seniors were touched by the wonderful outpouring of support by their families, teammates and fans. We were also thankful for the support of our wonderful community in helping us to raise money for a former student battling cancer.”

The Clover JV won in two sets.

Cloverdale 3, Eminence 0 The Clovers picked up a win on Tuesday, defeating Eminence in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-7.

Coach Moore said, “It was a good win for us as we prepare for sectionals.”

Serving — Monnett 10 points and season-high 5 aces, Simpson 10 points and one ace, Thomas 9 points and 2 aces, Stoltz 8, Rady 7 points and 1 ace, Meek 1 point and 1 ace.

Soccer

Tri-West (boys) 4, North Putnam 0 — At Lizton, the host Bruins defeated the Cougars in a sectional semifinal on Wednesday evening.

Tennis

Tiger Cubs eliminated — At Crawfordsville, Greencastle’s remaining players in the individual regional tournament were eliminated on Thursday.

Jed Fajt lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while the No. 1 doubles team of Elijah Lewis-Nathan Gobert lost 6-2, 7-5.
