Greencastle advanced both of its cross country teams and South Putnam will be sending its boys’ team to Saturday’s Ben Davis regional following competition on Saturday at South Putnam.

Chad Stevens and Chelsie Edwards of Cloverdale also advance after being among the top 10 individuals on non-advancing teams, along with South Putnam’s Maddie McHugh, Ally Nichols and Samara Young.

Greencastle sophomore Emma Wilson repeated her sectional title of a year ago, again defeating Avon’s Taylor Nicholson. Wilson won by eight seconds last year, but expanded her victory to 30 seconds this time around.

Greencastle’s Shelby Kallem finished 12th overall to run second for the Tiger Cubs, while Edwards was 14th overall and McHugh placed 18th.

Brownsburg won the team title with 38 points, edging second-place Avon by nine points. Greencastle placed fourth in the team standings with 96 points.

In the boys’ race, South Putnam’s Kieffer Vittetow finished second by three seconds to Daniel Gerber of Danville.

The Eagles were fourth in the team standings, while Greencastle was fifth.

Chad Stevens of Cloverdale will advance as an individual after finishing 34th.

Greencastle co-head coaches Mark Jedele and Craig Jordan were pleased with their team’s performance.

“We came, we ran, we progressed,” they said. “The girls team finished just as we expected.

"Emma ran a conservative race and was able to repeat as sectional champ,” Jedele and Jordan added. “Mika Mozawa had an absolutely stellar run and trimmed over three minutes from her time last year and set a 24-second personal best.”

They were also pleased with the performance of the boys’ team.

“We knew the boys were going to have to do something special to progress to the regionals and they delivered,” they said. “They were dialed in from the start and held strong throughout the entire race.

“We’re looking forward to competing next week at regionals.”

South Putnam coach Brandon Welti was also pleased with the performance of his teams.

“The girls ran really well overall,” he said. “Maddie McHugh really bounced back from the WIC meet with a great race.  She was off to a really good start and maintained that strong effort all the way to the finish line.

“If she can race like that again in a week, she should have a good shot at qualifying for semistate.”

Welti thought Samara Young had a huge breakout race as well.

“We’ve always known that she was capable of running like that, and it was good to see her finally do it,” he said. “Ally Nichols had a good race as well, and we know that she’s capable of running similar times as Maddie. “If all three of these girls can put together solid races like this at Ben Davis, they’ll definitely hit new PRs and be in contention for earning a chance to race at Semi State.”

Welti thought the boys’ race had a fast start.

“Surprisingly, no one really fell off the wagon,” he said. “Kieffer Vittetow made up a lot of ground on the second mile to give himself a chance of winning, but it just wasn’t there in the end.

“Regardless, he ran a great race and had a solid time on this course,” Welti added. “This was a huge improvement from a week ago.”

Welti said Vandermark continued to “amaze” for the Eagles.

“He yet again had an outstanding race, and his last 400 meters was the most impressive part,” he said. “Logan ran down four or five guys in the last 400, and that made a pretty big difference in the team standings.”

Welti also thought Dru Bottorff also really stood out at the sectional.

“He got out way too fast, but it didn’t come back to haunt him at all,” he said. “Dru really battled hard to stay in the mix and had a PR by more than 20 seconds on our course, which is no minor accomplishment.

“It was great to see the guys run so well and earn that fourth-place finish.”

Welti knows the regional meet will have a tough field.

“We still have goals to set PRs and have a few semistate qualifiers,” he said. “I just hope we can have nice weather on a fast course for a change.”

Cloverdale coach Andy Tyler thought his team ran with a “lot of heart” on Saturday.

“All three seniors ran well,” he said. “Chad ran into a few issues, but still ran his fastest time on this course.  Ryan [Heavener] and Nolan [Maners] both blew away their best times here.”

Tyler also thought youngsters Eddie Mannan, Rylan Hall, Elliott Williamson and Abel Bates all ran well.

“If we have a good off season they will be major contributors to the team next year,” he said.

Chelsie Edwards of Cloverdale placed 14th overall in the South Putnam girls' cross country sectional on Saturday.

Tyler thought Edwards had another “phenomenal race” in the girls’competition.

“She continues to show some real grit on the course,” he said. “We are looking forward to the regional, I know that Chad and Chelsie will represent Cloverdale well.”

North Putnam Kevin Lutes will not have any advancing runners, but was “very proud” of how the Cougar athletes ran this season.

“Saturday’s effort didn’t bring about PRs for everyone, but I saw each individual putting forth 100 percent,” he said. “My hope is that the kids realize how far they’ve progressed since we started, and that they understand how much better they are capable of becoming with more training.

“They are a great group of young people.”
