Suspect flees police at courthouse, gets only across the street

A 50-year-old Hendricks County man, taken into custody at the Putnam County Courthouse on two outstanding warrants, tried to make a break for it Friday morning as he was being put into a police car.

The suspect on the ground and backup on the way, Greencastle Police Sgt. Ed Wilson (standing) and Officer Darrel Bunten prepare to return Carey Carr of Brownsburg to Wilson's squad car late Friday morning. After running from Wilson's car outside the Putnam County Courthouse, Carr can add a fleeing law enforcement charge to the felony burglary and theft counts on which Wilson originally arrested him. But freedom eluded Carey Carr, Brownsburg, who didn't make it very far after bolting from police custody.

"He made it about 20 feet," Greencastle Sgt. Ed Wilson said Friday. "He made it across Franklin Street.

"Why he decided to run in handcuffs from a guy who runs marathons, I don't know," Wilson added.

Sgt. Wilson was at the courthouse when Carr was pointed out to him as having outstanding warrants for felony counts of burglary and theft. Wilson handcuffed the suspect and walked him out of the courthouse to his waiting squad car parked along the south side of Franklin Street when Carr had an apparent change of heart.

"He wasn't having it," Wilson said of the suspect being placed in the back of the police car, "so he had to be taken down."

And down Carr went at the northeast corner of Franklin and Jackson streets, between a mailbox and a green metal bench in front of Robert Perry's law office.

The officer called for assistance once he had Carr on the ground and GPD Officer Darrel Bunten quickly responded. The two GPD officers were then joined by several Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies, including those assigned to the courthouse.

Carr sustained minor injuries during the scuffle, Wilson said. The officer was uninjured.

"No, I'm a tough old dog," Sgt. Wilson said.

Carr, who was already facing a Level 5 felony burglary count and a Level 6 theft charge from an early September arrest, was taken to Putnam County Jail to be held on additional charges of fleeing law enforcement.

He was lodged in the jail on $30,000 cash-only bond with a 2 p.m. court date set for Monday, Oct. 17.
