Wilson claims first regional title
Eagle boys, six others advancing
INDIANAPOLIS – Greencastle’s Emma Wilson was the individual girls’ champion and the South Putnam boys’ team placed fourth to highlight Putnam County participants in the Ben Davis regional cross country meet on Saturday.
Wilson turned in a time of 18:09.1 to edge runnerup Sophia Rigg of Zionsville by 4.48 seconds to win her first-ever regional title. Last fall, Wilson placed second to Avon’s Taylor Nicholson in 18:03 and was 17 seconds off the winning pace.
Zionsville’s Angelina Ellis was third in 18:29.38 while Nicholson placed fourth in 18:38.16.
Zionsville easily won the team competition, defeating second-place Brownsburg by 49 points.
Greencastle placed sixth in the team competition, finishing just three places away from a qualifying position.
Shelby Kallem, the only senior running for the Tiger Cubs in the regional, will also be advancing to the Shelbyville semistate on Saturday after finishing 27th overall and seventh among runners from non-advancing teams.
“We’re extremely proud of the way both sides came out and competed,” Greencastle co-head coaches Mark Jedele and Craig Jordan said. “Everyone ran well and we fell just shy of our goal of qualifying to semi-state as a team.
“With four of our athletes progressing to the semistate meet, our team remains strong and united to see these runners through the end of their seasons.”
Cloverdale’s Chelsie Edwards was the eighth-fastest runner from a non-advancing team and also qualified for the semistate, while Maddie McHugh of South Putnam was ninth and earned one of the final two at-large spots.
In the boys’ meet, South Putnam got a seventh-place finish from Kieffer Vittetow and edged Brownsburg by one point to earn advancement as a team. Logan Vandermark placed 17th in 16:37.92 to run second for the Eagles, while the other three scoring runners (Dru Bottorff, Michael Crossman and Karl Egold) all placed from 37-46 to provide depth and an advancing team score.
“This was a great meet across the board,” South Putnam coach Brandon Welti said. “The conditions and competition were excellent, and the guys and girls both took advantage of it. We had huge PRs (personal records), some by a minute or more.”
Welti noted that McHugh’s time was just 10 seconds off the school record.
“That’s her goal for the semistate,” he said. “I was really glad to see Maddie qualify — she had a great race from start to finish.”
Welti thought Samara Young and Ally Nichols both had good times despite not qualifying for the semistate.
“Samara also had a big PR, and it was good to see her run that,” he said. “Ally was disappointed, but she ran a decent time.”
Welti termed the performance of the Eagle boys’ team as “incredible,” and the team outperformed expectations.
“We were hoping to set PRs, but advancing as a team wasn’t on our radar,” he said. “It completely blew our minds when they announced us as fourth. We’re still trying to process that.”
He thought each of his runners ran “fantastic” races.
“I can’t single out one person because they all ran so well,” he said. “They’ve worked hard all season and have earned this opportunity to race at semistate. We are really excited and shocked.”
The Eagles are excited for Saturday’s competition.
“PRs are again the goal for semistate, and state is the goal for Kieffer,” Welti said. “We’re looking forward to that race and can’t wait to see how things turn out.”
Greencastle’s Clayton Wilson (fourth) and Cameron Lewis (seventh) will also be competing in the semistate as individuals.
Cloverdale coach Andy Tyler also was pleased with the day.
“Chad [Stevens] and Chelsie both ran phenomenal races;, and both of them ran personal bests,” Tyler said. “Chad has had a great year; it was nice to see him go out with that kind of performance.”
Tyler noted the last Cloverdale runner to advance to the semistate level was current DePauw standout Claudia Monnett in 2012.
“Chelsie continues to improve by leaps and bounds every race,” he said. “I’m sure Chelsie will represent Cloverdale well. We are very excited.”
Avon won the boys’ team competition with 41 points, defeating runnerup Zionsville by 15 points.
