Halloween camping event set Oct. 29 at Raccoon SRA

Friday, October 21, 2016

Raccoon State Recreation Area will have its 23rd annual Halloween Camping Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Raccowl Egg Hunt begins at 10 a.m. behind the camp store across the street from the modern campgrounds. Crafts and face painting run from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Chapel Shelter.

A costume contest begins at 3 p.m. next to the camp host site. The contest has three age categories: Ages 5 and younger, ages 6 to 11, and ages 12 to adult. Prizes will be awarded.

The costume contest and a campsite decoration contest are the only events that are for campers only.

At 5 p.m., the campground will be closed to vehicular traffic for trick-or-treating, which runs until 7. Parking is available at the camp store, main ramp, office and along Berry Drive. After trick-or-treating, campers should meet at Chapel Shelter for the awards ceremony.

Hayrides through the campground will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from the campground gate before 7 p.m. Tickets will then be sold from Chapel Shelter until 8:30. Buying a ticket early does not guarantee a better spot in line.

All activities are free except for hayrides ($2 per person).

Standard weekend entrance fees of $7 per in-state vehicle and $9 per out-of-state vehicle apply.

For more information, persons may call (765) 344-1412.
