Featured Athlete of the Week: Shelby Kallem, Greencastle

Shelby Kallem is a senior member of the girls’ cross country team at Greencastle High School who is homeschooled for most of the day. She and her family, which includes sophomore cross country teammate and younger sister Sydney Kallem, moved to Greencastle this summer.

Shelby will compete in the Shelbyville semistate on Saturday.

Banner Graphic: What subject do you like studying the most?

Shelby Kallem: “Science.”

BG: What is it like to learn in a homeschool environment compared to a regular school?

SK: “It’s flexible. I can go at my own pace. It’s a good thing. I also take a class at Area 30 Career Center.”

BG: Do you miss being around people your age when studying at home?

SK: “No. There is not much that is bad. Besides running cross country, I have a lot of other activities with church and youth group. I have a lot of friends.”

BG: How did your family wind up in Greencastle”

SK: “We moved here three months ago from Marion, Ill. My dad is the new pastor at New Life Baptist Church. We like it here.”

BG: How are your grades and test scores going?

SK: “We keep a transcript for college for when I apply like every other high school student. I have done well on the ACT.”

BG: What else do you besides schoolwork, sports and church activities?

SK: “I’m going to start taking piano lessons again. I play the piano, I used to babysit a lot and I also used to give piano lessons.”

BG: Do you have pets?

SK: “We have two cats. Nutcracker and Peaches. They are always there.”

BG: Is it good to have your sister on the team with you?

SK: “Yes. We were on the team together at Marion, also. We compete against each other.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school?

SK: “I’m going to go to a Christian university and I’m going to try to run there.”
