‘Graveyards and Cemeteries’ topic Saturday

Friday, October 28, 2016

Just in time for Halloween, it’s “Graveyards and Cemeteries!” at the Putnam County Museum Saturday evening, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m.

Putnam County historian Larry Tippin will share curious stories and thought-provoking information about burial sites in the area.

In case you’re wondering about the difference, technically, a graveyard is part of a church’s grounds. Cemetery is from the Greek word for “sleeping place” and cemeteries are usually independent of a church.

Cemeteries showcase much of our local history, both the mundane and the sensational. Tippin will share his knowledge of unique and ordinary gravesites in the county.

From unknown soldiers to murdered newlyweds, Putnam County resting places cover a wide range of historical events and human emotions. Burial customs, folk practices and grave etiquette will also be discussed.

Tippin developed an interest in local cemeteries when researching his family’s history, a family that has been in the local community since the early 1820s. His recognition of the importance of cemeteries for genealogical research led him to serve on the Putnam County Cemetery Board and ultimately undertake cemetery restorations.

Tippin has located more than 100 resting places of our departed over the years and has helped others realize the importance of preserving and protecting local cemeteries, which contain a wealth of our history.

Attendees to this free program will receive a helpful resource sheet of websites, including Tippin’s own Putnam County website. The museum is located at 1105 N. Jackson St., Greencastle.

For more information, persons may call the museum at 653-8419.
