Greencastle’s Wilson eyes repeat of all-state honors

Saturday, October 29, 2016

Greencastle’s Emma Wilson will compete today in the Indiana High School Athletic Association state cross country meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course east of Terre Haute.

Wilson finished seventh in last week’s Shelbyville semistate.

She is the fourth- highest returning runner from last year’s state finals, in which she placed eighth as a freshman.

Carmel’s Sarah Leinheiser is the defending state champion, and won last year’s race with a time of 17:30.8.

She sat out the sectional meet, then won the regional and semistate titles.

Carmel won the team title at the Shelbyville semistate last week with 15 points. The Greyhounds have won the last six girls’ state titles and eight of the last nine.

If they win today, it would be their record-setting 18th title.

The boys’ individual champion will be new this year, as 2015 champ Ben Veatch graduated and now runs for Indiana University.

Top-ranked Carmel is also favored to win the boys’ team title, which would be the fourth in the last five years.

If Carmel wins, it would be the record-setting 15th title for the Greyhounds.

Twenty-four full teams (six from each semistate) and 40 more individuals from non-advancing teams (10 from each semistate) will be competing today.

The girls’ race begins at 1 p.m., with the boys’ race to start at 1:45 p.m.

The races will be shown online at ihsaatv.org.
