City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to 15 dispatches.

• At 1:07 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 1 Taylor Pl. The alarm, which toned out again shortly after (then handled by the DePauw Police Department), was likely set off due to smoking in the building.

• At 1:12 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a gas spill at 1157 Indianapolis Rd. Approximately one gallon of gas had spilled on the ground at the Speedway filling station. GFD promptly cleaned the area with Oil Dry.

• At 2:02 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 109 W. Hanna St. Upon arrival, the DePauw Police Department reported the alarm had been set off unnecessarily due to cooking and had already reset the alarm.

• On Friday evening, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 626 E. Seminary St. No smoke was visible upon arrival. However, GFD determined the smoke reportedly had been emitted by a smoke machine which caused the alarm on the building’s third floor.

• At 1:19 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 109 E. Hanna St. A vaporizer reportedly caused the second-floor fire alarm.

• At 2:12 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 807 S. College Ave. The DePauw Police Department advised GFD that the alarm was caused by a pull station and that campus police had already reset the alarm.

• At 2:29 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 905 S. College Ave. Again, the DePauw Police Department advised GFD that the alarm was caused by a pull station and that campus police had already reset the alarm.

• At 10:31 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 1 Taylor Pl. The alarm, which reportedly came from room number 343, was reset.

• At 11:02 a.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a motor-vehicle accident at 501 W. Washington St. The collision, which resulted in entrapment and injuries, was caused when a vehicle drove into a house and rolled onto its passenger side. Operation Life was on scene to transport a patient to the Putnam County Hospital. Though heavy damage was reported, utilities for the residence were left unaffected (see story on Page 1A of today’s edition).

• At 2:49 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 626 E. Seminary St. The second-floor alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily by an aging fire extinguisher.

• At 6:17 p.m. on Saturday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 101 E. Hanna St. GFD determined the alarm had been set off unnecessarily by maintenance crews that were working on the alarm systems.

• At 9:56 p.m. on Saturday, GFD assisted the Bellmore Fire Department (BFD) in the extrication of an individual who had become stuck inside of a hay shredder at 11999 East U.S. 36 in Parke County. GFD responded alongside Rescue One with all departments involved using equipment and manpower in the extrication process. StatFlight also responded to the scene, which promptly departed and returned with a trauma surgeon in the event that a field amputation was necessary. However, no amputation took place as GFD, BFD, Rescue One and StatFlight were eventually able to remove the patient. GFD ultimately cleared the scene and returned to station at 11:41 p.m.

• At 12:13 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a pull-station fire alarm at 415 Anderson St. The pull station, located in the basement of the building, was broken. GFD advised the resident to call the alarm company for repair.

• At 12:58 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a malicious fire alarm at 807 S. College Ave. The DePauw Police Department was already on scene upon arrival and had evacuated the building. However, the alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily and GFD subsequently returned to station.

• At 3:16 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 905 S. College Ave. The DePauw Police Department was again already on scene upon arrival and advised GFD that the first-floor alarm had been reset.
