County Jail

Fourteen people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Tuesday

• Shortly before 3 a.m. a pair of Brazil men were booked in on related charges following their arrests by Greencastle Police.

At 2:58 a.m. Derrick Mitchell, 22, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia

At 2:56 a.m. Patrick Ryan Crowell, 32, was charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Monday

• At 4:30 p.m Anthony Ray Eversole, 36, Poland, was lodged at the jail on a court order.

• At 10:20 a.m. Tyler Matthew Sanchez, 22, Brazil, was taken into custody for battery with bodily injury.

• At 9:47 a.m. William Dean Bell, 40, Poland, was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

Sunday

• At 11:29 p.m. Brandi Lynn Callahan, 40, Greencastle, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 9:57 p.m. Daniel Ernest Crickmore, 33, Indianapolis, was booked in on a writ of body attachment.

• At 3:21 a.m. Jason Robert Bishop, 32, Coatesville, was charged with domestic battery, disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement and criminal mischief.

Saturday

• At 2:47 a.m. Emmett Paul Gaddis, 44, Bainbridge, was lodged at the jail for operating while intoxicated.

• At 12:59 a.m. Hickory Lynn Smith, 25, Brazil, was taken into custody on a local warrant.

Friday

• At 9:57 p.m. George Edwin Pearson, 58, Bainbridge, was arrested on a local warrant.

• At 5:18 p.m. Richard James Watkins, 30, Martinsville, was housed at the jail on a Johnson County warrant.

• At 3:25 p.m. Juan Jose Garcia, 20, Indianapolis, was booked in on a warrant for failure to appear.

City Police

Two property-damage accidents were investigated recently by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 5:13 p.m. Monday, a two-car accident was reported on North Jackson Street near Columbia Street.

Kindria Martin, 25, Greencastle, was stopped in traffic behind other vehicles in a 2004 Nissan Sentra when her car was struck in the rear by a 2007 Ford Mustang driven by Destiny Frazier, 20, Greencastle, Reserve Officer Billy Wallace reported.

Total damage in the mishap was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

Frazier was cited for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

• At 3:12 p.m. Monday, a two-vehicle mishap was reported on State Road 240 near Calbert Way on the city’s East Side.

William Zimmer Jr., 32, Russellville, was stopped in traffic in a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Sgt. Ed Wilson reported, when the Zimmer car was struck from behind by a 2007 Dodge Charger driven by Lyndsey Pate, 29, Greencastle.

Pate told police she applied her brakes but the car slid on wet pavement into the rear of the Zimmer vehicle.

Total damage in the accident was listed at $2,500-$5,000.

Sheriff’s Department

A Gosport man remains hospitalized following a Friday, Nov. 4 motorcycle accident.

Shortly before 4 a.m., David L. Winship, 49, had been eastbound on U.S. 40 east of Manhattan on a custom 2005 AMF FLS Series motorcycle.

Officers arrived to find the rider lying unconscious in the eastbound lane. Bystanders told told Reserve Deputy Rick Lambert that a witness who did not remain on scene said a deer ran into Winship’s path, causing him to lose control.

He slid 77 feet before being ejected and coming to rest on the side of the road.

Winship was not wearing a helmet and suffered severe head bleeding. Operation Life transported him to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he remains.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

Lambert was assisted by Deputy Anthony Brown.

Deputies responded to six other mishaps involving deer.

• At 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, Susan K. Lanham, 66, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 near County Road 500 East in a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder when she hit a deer.

Deputy Jacob Harrington estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000 The vehicle was towed.

• At 6:29 p.m. on Sunday, James B. Hacker, 75, Cloverdale, was eastbound on U.S. 40 just west of U.S. 231 in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado when he hit a deer.

Deputy Riley Houghton estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

• At 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, Payne D. Stewart, 23, Fillmore, was westbound on County Road 325 North east of County Road 50 East in a 2014 Chevrolet CZT.

He told Deputy Jeffery Freeman that as he rounded a curve, he came upon a deer and swerved to miss it, leaving the road and hitting a tree.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000. The vehicle was towed.

• At 8:10 p.m. on Friday, Theresa M. Tincher, 56, Rockville, was eastbound on County Road 350 North in the area of County Road 900 West when he hit a deer.

Deputy Harrington estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 5:39 p.m. on Friday, Shawn T. Goldsberry, 43, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 just east of County Road 750 South when he hit a deer.

Deputy Houghton estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 6:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, Karri N. Shumer, 33, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 25 East just south of County Road 25 North in a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox shen she hit a deer.

Deputy Donnie Pettit estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to six dispatches.

• At 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to smoking at 1 Taylor Pl. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 2:21 a.m.

• At 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 807 S. College Ave. The alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily and the DePauw Police Department had already reset the alarm upon arrival. GFD subsequently returned to station at 2:33 a.m.

• At 1:36 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 106 S. Spring St. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 1:51 p.m.

• At 7:46 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to reports of a fire at 30 Frazier St. Light smoke in the residence was determined to have been due to a small electrical fire resulting from a short in the building’s water heater caused by a leak in an adjacent water pipe. The small fire, resulting in considerable smoke, was out upon arrival. GFD turned off power to the water heater and ventilated the residence to clear smoke from the building before returning to station at 8:18 p.m.

• At 8:08 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 109 W. Hanna St., building two. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 8:18 p.m.

• At 10:53 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 101 E. Hanna St., DePauw University’s newly-built Hoover Hall. Fans used to clear cooking smoke above cooking elements were determined to have been the cause and reportedly were not strong enough to handle the amount of smoke. GFD returned to station at 11:14 p.m.
