Walker scores 22 as Clovers top Lady Lakers 78-55

Sunday, November 13, 2016

JASONVILLE — Abby Walker scored 22 points and 10 different Clovers scored as Cloverdale picked up a 78-55 girls’ basketball win at Shakamak on Saturday evening.

Sammie Shrum added 12 points, along with 10 each from Kelsey Helterbrand Lakkain Price, as Cloverdale moved to 3-1 on the young season.

Walker did most of her damage from behind the arc, with five three-pointers made on the evening.

The Clover defense also had a good night, benefitting from more than 20 Lady Laker (1-3) turnovers.

Alyssa Garo of Shakamak led all scorers with 33 points, who Clover coach Matthew Langdon said “really hurt us.”

It was the lack of other options that hurt Shakamak, though, as Brittany Huddleston was the only other Lady Laker in double figures with 10.

The third quarter was pivotal for the Clovers, as they took an eight-point halftime lead and stretched it to 19 with a 26-15 quarter.

Overally, Langdon was happy with the play of his youthful team.

“We’re young, but we’re getting better every game,” Langdon said. “The girls are very supportive of each other.”

Langdon is looking forward to the opportunity provided Friday and Saturday by the Putnam County Tournament at South Putnam.

“We hope to win that,” Langdon said, “something we haven’t done in a pretty long time.”
