DePauw wins Tipoff Tourney title

The DePauw University women’s basketball team rode an 18-2 first quarter into a 52-47 win over Rose-Hulman on Saturday in the championship game of the DePauw Tipoff Tournament.

Maya Howard led DePauw with 12 points and eight rebounds. She was the only Tiger to score in double figures, while 11 different Tigers scored.

Rose-Hulman (1-1) had the cold start Saturday, shooting 16 percent (3-of-19) from the court in the first half. DePauw opened the first half at 45 percent (14-of-31) and led 32-17 after two quarters.

Rose-Hulman got back into it with a reversal of fortunes in the second half, with the Fighting Engineers shooting 42 percent (11-of-26) to DePauw’s 22 percent (5-of-23).

DePauw finished the game at 35 percent (19-of-54), slightly ahead of Rose Hulman’s 31 percent (14-of-45).

Rose-Hulman took the fourth quarter 19-5, but it was too little too late as the Tigers did just enough to close the game out. DePauw had 10 steals and outrebounded Rose-Hulman 34-27. Their 14 offensive rebounds resulted in 12 second chance points.

Freshman Sydney Kopp added seven points. Taylor Howard scored six, and Melinda Franke added two points and eight rebounds.

Contributions came from everywhere for the Tigers. Paige Littrell came off the bench and put up five points in six minutes, and Lauren Longbrake had two points and two rebounds in her two minutes of playing time.

The Tigers host Franklin Tuesday at 8 p.m.

• Washington (Mo.) men 84, DePauw 77 — The Tigers battled 20th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) until the end but couldn’t pull off the upset in an 84-77 loss on Saturday.

Luke Lattner became the 26th player in DePauw history to score 1,000 points in a career. He finished with 22 despite fouling out with 3:05 remaining. DePauw trailed 74-67 at the time.

Jack VanderMerkt was a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ethan Jarrett provided a spark off the bench and added 12 points.

DePauw shot 48 percent (28-of-59) compared to WashU’s 46 percent (26-of-57). DePauw also shot 37 percent (10-of-27) from 3-point range and 69 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe.

The lead changed six times, and DePauw never led by more than one, while WashU’s biggest lead came late at 77-67 with 2:38 remaining.

WashU used its height in winning the rebounding battle 37-28 and outscoring DePauw in the paint 38-30. They also pulled down 11 offensive rebounds to hold the second chance point advantage at 12-6.

The teams traded leads in the first 10 minutes of play as the score showed 17-17 at one point until WashU took a 36-31 lead entering halftime.

DePauw pulled to within two points a few times early in the second half and cut the lead to four at 63-59 after a David Vogel 3-pointer with 7:37 remaining. After two successful possessions from WashU, Vogel hit another 3-pointer to make it a 67-62 game with 6:36 left.

They would not get any closer until one minute remained in the game following back-to-back 3-pointers from Jarrett and Cris Burrough.

Burrough and Vogel each finished with eight points.

WashU improves to 2-0, while DePauw drops to 0-2. The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday when they host Boyce at 6 p.m.

Cross country

• Monnett places 50th — At Louisville, Ky., DePauw senior Claudia Monnett of Cloverdale competed at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday and finished 50th.

Monnett completed the 6,000-meter course in 21:37.0. Through the first 4.18 kilometers, Monnett was in 30th place.
