CR 100 east reopens following replacement
Closed since May at Big Walnut Creek, County Road 100 East reopened recently with the replacement to Crowe’s Bridge now nearly complete.
A federal aid project that’s been in the works since 1999, only a few finishing touches remain for completion of the new bridge.
Built in 1902, this historic iron truss bridge was removed early this summer, replaced by a modern concrete bridge.
The project also made for straighter, flatter approaches to the new bridge.
The reopening of 100 East gives residents two modern crossings of Big Walnut in northern Greencastle Township, along with County Road 25 East (Houck Road) to the west.
Ricketts gave updates on several other bridge projects as well.
Replacement of Bridge 248 in Jackson Township is also near completion. Ricketts said the new structure over Big Walnut Creek is undergoing paving, guardrail and approach work this week.
County officials are hopeful about reopening County Road 650 East south of Indiana 236 by Nov. 29.
Bridge 42 over Ramp Creek in Franklin Township remains under construction by county crews. County Road 25 West has been closed for the project since August.
Work has begun on Bridge 110 over Leatherman Creek in Madison Township. Completion should be by the end of the year.
In other business:
• The commissioners accepted the bid from McCloud Electric Service to replace the eight existing outdoor light fixtures on the courthouse with LED models.
The Roachdale-based contractor will perform the work for $2,800.
• County Attorney Jim Ensley presented the commissioners with the first draft of the 2016 EDIT (Economic Development Income Tax) plan.
The commissioners will review the plan independently but it will be advertised and approved at a later meeting.
• Dr. Robert Heavin was reappointed as the county health officer.
• The commissioners approved requests related to the December First Friday event, planned for Friday, Dec. 2 on courthouse square.
Main Street Greencastle President George Velazquez requested the commissioners approval that lights again be strung from the top of the courthouse down to the outer edge of the lawn, as well as the decoration of the evergreen tree in the northwest corner of the courthouse lawn.
Both requests were granted, provided that limestone work on the courthouse is completed in time.
Additionally, Santa Claus will be visiting the first floor of the courthouse from 6-8 p.m. that evening.
