Eagle girls improve to 5-1 with Wednesday win at SV

Friday, December 2, 2016

CLINTON — South Putnam fell behind 11-4 after one quarter in girls’ high school basketball action at South Vermillion on Wednesday.

The Eagles used an 11-1 second quarter and a 12-4 third period to come back and record a 44-37 victory, improving their record to 5-1.

“We got off to a slow start, down 9-0 and 11-4 after the first quarter,” SP coach Brian Gardner said. “We played better defense in the second quarter that allowed us to make a run.”

Miranda Bieghler led the Eagles with 11 points and Stein added 10, despite getting into early foul trouble.

“I was very impressed with how she kept her composure and continued to play well for us throughout the game,” Gardner said. “Miranda Bieghler led us with 11 points and Aubrey Barker had eight points; both of them had a good evening, playing well on both ends of the floor.”

Gardner said that a reduction in turnovers helped his team to play better.

“We did a better job of taking care of the ball then we have in the past few games,” he said. “We will need to continue to make those strides into the next week of action.”

• Terre Haute South defeats Greencastle — The Braves won the boys’ meet by a 130-53 score and the girls’ meet by a 131-52 margin on Thursday.

“The scores from the meet don’t tell the whole story about how well we did,” Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. “Terre Haute South is one of the toughest teams on our schedule and one of the best teams in our region. We were hitting lifetime best performances all over the pool from start to finish of the meet.”

Menzel noted the 100 free style was one event in which his team did well.

“We charged the team with an emphasis on their 100 free swims, and we were rewarded with six lifetime best efforts. Those 100 frees were just the tip of the iceberg for our Sharks.”

Menzel noted the team had “impressive” event wins from Nathan Gobert in the 50 free, Grace Gillen in the 500 free, and Jack Riggle in the 100 fly, along with a win in the medley relay by Jack Romer, Preston Headley, Riggle, and Gobert (including three lifetime best splits).

“The path does not get easier as we face powerhouse Bloomington North next week,” Menzel said, “but our Sharks are prepared for the challenge.
