North Putnam senior tight end Max Haste was named to the Associated Press Class 2A all-state first team on Wednesday after a stellar season for the Cougars.

Haste, a 6-3, 220-pounder, caught 49 passes for 770 yards and caught three touchdowns in helping the Cougars to compile a 7-3 record.

“Max is a kid who can catch the ball extremely well,” North Putnam coach Greg Barrett said. “He is very good in space, and he can block extremely well on the edge.

“He will be a good college football player for somebody.”

Haste is considering Marian, where his brother Jake is a member of the baseball team.

“He would love to go there,” Barrett said. “Indiana State is after him, along with lot of Division III schools.”

Barrett considers Haste as a good athlete with a lot of talent who worked hard to achieve his success.

“He’s a big kid, and I think he’ll get bigger,” Barrett said.

Two other Cougars were given honorable mention — senior Solomon Gross at running back and junior Ethan Christy at linebacker.

Barrett said Gross is still considering his options for college, while Christy — the Banner Graphic Defensive Player of the Year — will return again next fall to anchor the Cougars on defense.

“Solomon is a Division I type of player,” Barrett said. “These honors are very well deserved for all three of those three guys.”

Greencastle’s Devin Clar also received honorable mention, after gaining 1,874 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns in leading the Tiger Cubs to a turnaround from a 1-9 record in 2015 to a 9-2 mark this season.

Clar was the Banner Graphic “Offensive Player of the Year.”

John Pasch, son of former North Putnam coach Dave Pasch, was named to the Class A first team. He is a 6-2, 250-pound offensive lineman. Pasch was Barrett’s predecessor with the Cougars.
