High-scoring Indian Creek sweeps Clovers

Saturday, December 10, 2016

CLOVERDALE — Cloverdale welcomed the Indian Creek Braves to town on Friday night as part of a Western Indiana Conference doubleheader, and the high-scoring Braves emerged with a pair of wins.

The Indian Creek Braves boys came out firing and got out to a 13-0 lead before the Clovers scored their first points, and continued their hot shooting throughout the game to take the victory, 97-76.

In the girls’ game, Cloverdale trailed just 17-14 after one quarter, but Indian Creek used a 22-10 second quarter to go on to a 66-41 win.

Cloverdale boys’ coach Patrick Rady was not happy with his team’s defense.

“We need to get better at moving on defense as well as our ball pressure,” Rady said. “We need to have five guys that can pressure the ball and make the offense uncomfortable. We need to arrive to the guy on the catch.”

Indian Creek (3-1, 2-0 WIC) got out to a huge lead to start the first half as the Braves hit nine three-pointers to take a 44-35 lead.

Cloverdale (2-3, 0-2 WIC) was down by 22 points, 37-15, early in the second quarter but battled back with a 28-7 run to trim it down going into the half.

“I was proud of them,” Rady said. “We need to put more solid stretches together on the defensive end. We have to get to the point where we don’t have those little lulls. We need to be able to play 32 minutes.”

Senior Cooper Neese and junior Jalen Moore sparked the run en route to scoring 45 points and 21 points in the game, respectively.

Neese had nine of the team’s 20 rebounds as well, while Indian Creek had 39. Three players were tied with eight for the Braves.

“I thought rebounding hurt us once we made the run to cut the lead down,” Rady said. “We needed to have all five guys on the glass.”

Indian Creek scored 53 points in the second half, many on easy layups after breaking the press and exploiting the zone.

Even though Indian Creek scored 97 points, Cloverdale’s defense was pretty solid in the halfcourt. Indian Creek rarely missed a long ball, going 13-for-19 from behind the arc.

Cloverdale struggled shooting from the floor going 25-for-58 and just 9-of-29 behind the arc.

“We are looking to get better with the defensive rebounds and keep them to a low shooting percentage,” Rady said. “You can’t win games when they shoot 70 percent from deep, we need to hold opponents to under 40 percent.”

In the girls’ game, Indian Creek got out to a very quick start midway through the first quarter and led Cloverdale 12-2. Cloverdale turned the ball over five times in the first four minutes.

The Clovers could not recover from this deficit, as they kept turning the ball over en route to having 19 turnovers for the game.

Cloverdale also struggled from the field, going just 17-for-45, while Indian Creek was hot, going 25-for-47.

Tori Combs led the Clovers with 15 points, while Kelsey Helterbrand added eight and Lakkain Price had seven.
