Swimming

• Eagles fall to Mustangs — South Putnam lost a pair of swimming meets to visiting Fountain Central on Saturday.

South Putnam’s medley relay team of Masey Chambers, Alex Fanning, Evvie Timberman and Christina Marcum fought hard for their first-place finish to start the meet.

Coach Anna Kendall noted that Jared Seidler swam lifetime bests in both the 200IM and 100 breaststroke, dropping two seconds from each previous PR.

Keira Wells had an exceptional meet, swimming a PR with each event, most notably the 200IM (three-second drop), but also the 500 and the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay (a 1.5-second drop from her previous best relay split).

Jenna Carmichael continues to improve on the diving board, Kendall said, securing a first-place finish for the team by .25 points, and improving on her previous best as well.

Ryan Neumann had a four-second PR in the 100 free as well as dropping time in the 200 free.

“He does a fantastic job of staying in the meet from beginning to end, and is rewarded by consistent improvements each time he competes,” Kendall said.

South’s breaststrokers dominated the pool, with Fanning and Abby Teipen taking first and second place, respectively, followed by Malachi Van Rensselaer in fourth for the girls. On the guys’ side, Jared Seidler and Daniel Johnson took first and second, respectively.

Other athletes also swam lifetime bests during this meet:

Angelina Becker – 50 free

Morgan Dixon – 100 free and 100 back

Daniel Johnson – 100 free

Alex Faudree – 50 free

Andrew Carr – 500 free

Kate McCammack – 100 back

Justin Pitts – 100 free (relay split)

• Athenians sweep Tiger Sharks — At Crawfordsville, the Athenians swept the visiting Tiger Sharks on Monday.

Crawfordsville won the girls’ meet 100-74, and captured the boys’ meet 135-50.

“We knew going in that the Athenians will always give us a tough meet, and that was certainly the case,” Greencastle coach Kent Menzel said. “We had several great moments for the meet.”

Menzel noted event wins by junior Grace Gillen (50 free and 500 free), senior Cecilia Pohlar (100 free) and junior Preston Headley (100 breast) among the highlights.

“Both Cecilia and Grace helped power our girls to a win in the 200 Medley Relay as well,” Menzel added. “We learned a great deal from the meet that we hope to put into the mix for our Putnam County Championship Saturday at DePauw.”
