County Jail

Four people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Wednesday

• At 4:29 p.m. Corey Len Duff Jr., 20, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 12:13 a.m. Jennifer Roseanna Keller, 30, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a local warrant.

Tuesday

• At 1:50 p.m. Melanie Lea Rice, 30, Indianapolis, was booked in on a local warrant.

• At 8:54 a.m. Chrissee Nicole Walton, 32, Cloverdale, was housed a the jail for parole violation.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to eight recent property damage crashes.

• At 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday, James E. Seipel, 24, Greencastle, was pulling onto County Road 150 West from his driveway in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado.

As he pulled onto the road, the driver’s side front corner crossed the center line as a Freightliner semi driven by Randal L. Asher was southbound.

Asher told Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle he could not avoid Seipel’s pickup.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Lenard W. Songer, 36, Indianapolis, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2000 Mazda 626 when he hit a patch of ice.

The car left the road and spun 180 degrees, hitting a utility pole before coming to rest facing north.

Songer was transported to and Indianapolis hospital for an arm injury.

Deputy Anthony Brown estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 6:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Brittany M. McClure, 20, Bainbridge, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

McClure told Deputy Brown she met a southbound vehicle with its high beams on and could not see a deer in her lane, striking the animal.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 6:06 a.m. on Tuesday, Torie L. Switzer, 31, Dennison, Ill., was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2007 Jeep Commander when she hit a deer.

Deputy Brown estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 7:22 p.m. on Monday, Christina L. Keene, 35, Knightsville, was southbound on County Road 375 West in a 2008 Nissan Altima when she hit a deer.

The vehicle was towed. Deputy Brown estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 9:34 p.m. on Saturday, Mark N. Dunn, 37, Greencastle, was apparently eastbound on State Road 240 near County Road 425 East in a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina.

Deputy Brown reported that Dunn could not give a statement at the scene due to incapacitating injuries. Tire marks indicated the car crossed the westbound lanes and left the road on the north side.

The car hit a guardrail and continued northeast before coming to rest facing southwest.

Dunn was taken to Eskinazi Hospital in Indianapolis for his injuries.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, Courtney R. Smith, 22, Roachdale, southbound on U.S. 231 just north of County Road 200 North in a 2017 Toyota Camry when she hit a door.

Lt. Donnie Pettit estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 10:21 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, Jason J. Wehrman, 45, Fort Campbell, Tenn., was westbound on County Road 300 North in a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado.

Wehrman told Deputy Brown h was meeting another vehicle and moved to the right side of the road. His truck then started to fishtail.

He crossed the eastbound lane and shoulder, hitting a tree on the driver’s side.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to five dispatches and one medical assist.

• At 4:15 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to reports of a gas spill at the intersection of Vine and Washington streets. Some gasoline, less than five gallons, was removed from the roadway. GFD subsequently cleared the scene and returned to station at 6:25 p.m.

• At 5:54 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to and assisted the Fillmore Fire Department with a motor-vehicle accident on State Road 240 at Chadd Valley. The two-vehicle collision resulted in the extrication of one passenger from a vehicle. GFD returned to station at 6:35 p.m.

• At 3:08 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD responded to a carbon monoxide alarm at 3510 South U.S. 231. After monitoring the air, GFD was unable to detect any carbon monoxide and advised the resident to change the building’s carbon monoxide detector. GFD then returned to station at 3:53 p.m.

• At 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to reports of “excessive heat” at a residence located at 35 S. Bloomington St. GFD initially performed a smoke investigation, finding a hotspot inside of a wall that contained small amounts of smoke. The hotspot was determined to have been caused by rolls of carpeting that had been placed near a baseboard heater. GFD removed the carpeting, found no fire and didn’t clear the scene until the county’s fire inspector investigated the hotspot and gave the all-clear. GFD returned to station at 12:06 p.m.

• At 5:55 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a motor-vehicle accident that occurred at the railroad crossing on North Jackson Street. GFD assisted in the removal of debris and fluids from the roadway before returning to station at 6:10 p.m.
