Cougar girls, boys get wins in tourneys

North Putnam’s varsity basketball teams were both involved in holiday tournaments on Thursday with the Cougar girls competing at Speedway and the NP boys’ team playing at Monrovia.

The Cougar girls lost their first game, but picked up their first win of the season in the consolation bracket.

North Putnam’s boys won their first game in the eight-team tourney, and were defeated in the semifinals.

Girls

Speedway 31, North Putnam 27 – The Cougars led 7-2 after one quarter before the Sparkplugs came from behind in the second half.

Aleah Duncan had seven points and Hannah Sims had five for the Cougars.

North Putnam 33, Rising Sun 26 - North Putnam led 23-19 after three quarters and broke the game open with a 10-7 advantage in the fourth period to pick up its first win of the season.

Hannah Sims and Aleah Duncan each had six points to lead a balanced Cougar attack.

Boys

North Putnam 72, Bethesda Christian 71 – Elliot Gross hit a putback at the buzzer following a Preston Porter 3-point attempt as the Cougars won their tourney opener.

Gross led the Cougars with 24 points, while Porter had 19, Duke Duff had 14 and Treyton Smith added eight.

Southwestern (Shelby) 62, North Putnam 55 – The Spartans led 17-12 after one quarter and went on to post a seven-point victory.

The Cougars will now play in the third-place game at 6 p.m. today against Brown County, which lost 82-67 to Indian Creek earlier on Thursday.
