Two men implicated in the Dec. 7 armed robbery of Cloverdale Liquors are being held on $50,000 cash bond following separate initial hearings Tuesday afternoon in Putnam Superior Court.

Dalton C. Perryman, 26, Martinsville, is facing three felony charges, read aloud by Superior Court Judge Denny Bridges as:

-- Armed robbery, a Level 3 felony carrying a sentencing range of 3-16 years in prison.

Dennis Kent

-- Theft, a Level 6 felony carrying a sentencing range of 6-30 months in jail.

-- Conspiracy to commit armed robbery, another Level 3 felony carrying a sentencing range of 3-16 years in prison.

If convicted on all three charges, Perryman could receive a maximum sentence of more than 34 years.

The perceived “inside man” in the heist, Dennis L. Kent, 40, Greencastle, is charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, a Level 3 felony carrying a sentencing range of 3-16 years in prison.

Judge Bridges named court-appointed legal counsel for both suspects. Scott Bieniek was chosen to represent Perryman while Austin Malayer was appointed to represent Kent.

Pretrial conferences in the case are set for March 8.

Putnam County Prosecutor Timothy Bookwalter asked for $50,000 cash bond for each suspect and Judge Bridges complied with those requests.

Should the suspects bond out, they both have no-contacts orders in place with Cloverdale Liquors and the female clerk who was working there when the Dec. 7 robbery was committed.

Perryman was arrested on a warrant by Cloverdale Police Sgt. Charlie Hallam Dec. 28. Kent has been in jail since Dec. 9 on unrelated charges.

During their investigation, Putnam Sheriff’s Department detectives Pat McFadden and Doug Nally discovered video surveillance, physical evidence and witnesses they believe link the men to the robbery.

Kent, who had been employed as a clerk at Cloverdale Liquors, was arrested at the store Dec. 9 on an outstanding Owen County warrant. Owen officials allege Kent failed to appear at a review hearing regarding a May 2016 conviction for driving with a suspended license.

At the time of his most recent arrest, just two days after the robbery, Kent was reportedly wearing all new clothes and jewelry. He was also discovered to be in possession of methamphetamine and a controlled substance, charges for which he has remained in the Putnam County Jail ever since.

Kent’s criminal history includes a pair of misdemeanor drug-related convictions in Putnam and Marion counties.

Perryman, meanwhile, was twice convicted of Class D felony theft in separate 2011 Morgan County cases, for which he spent nearly a year in the Indiana Department of Correction.
