DePauw’s Lattner named top player; Tiger Cub girls win again

DePauw University senior Luke Lattner was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after guiding the Tigers to two victories last week.

Lattner averaged 28 points between the two games, scoring 36 in their 100-91 win over Allegheny and 20 in their 73-64 win against Kenyon. Lattner also averaged six rebounds and 4.5 assists between the two games. He shot 50 percent from the floor (16-of-32) and 87 percent from the free throw line (20-of-23).

On the year, Lattner is averaging 20.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game and is shooting 43 percent from the floor. Lattner has 1,223 career points, and he needs just nine to pass Jeff Hallgren (1974-78) for 15th place in school history.

DePauw is now 8-5 overall and is tied for second place in the NCAC at 4-2. They will look to continue their winning streak tonight at nationally-ranked Denison (12-1, 6-0).

• Tigers win fifth straight — On Saturday, the Tigers picked up their fifth consecutive victory with a 73-64 win over Kenyon College in an NCAC matchup.

Senior Luke Lattner led all scorers with 20 points, and Jack VandeMerkt recorded a double-double at 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ethan Jarrett scored 14 off the bench, and James Clarke tallied 11 of his own.

Kenyon was led by Bennett Grigull’s 14 points and Matt Shifrin’s 13.

Both teams went back-and-forth for the opening 12 minutes before DePauw took a 23-14 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Kenyon cut the lead to four but a late layup from Lattner gave the Tigers a 41-35 advantage at the half.

DePauw again expanded their lead midway through the second half and got it to as large as 12 with six minutes remaining at 63-51. However, Kenyon broke off on a 10-2 run and cut it to 65-61 with 2:36 remaining.

DePauw shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the floor compared to Kenyon’s 37 percent (26-of-70). The Tigers were also 8-of-15 from long range (53 percent) and 25-of-34 from the foul line. Kenyon struggled from deep at 27 percent (6-of-22) and went just 6-of-9 (67 percent) from the line.

The win pushes DePauw to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC. Kenyon drops to 2-11 and 1-5.

Women

Tigers win 11th straight — DePauw trailed by as many as five in the third period, but in the final 15 minutes the Tigers outscored visiting Kenyon 35-17 to take a 68-55 NCAC win on Saturday. The 19th-ranked Tigers improved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the NCAC with their 11th straight win, while the Ladies dropped to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in conference.

The teams battled through a tight first half that included nine ties and four lead changes with Kenyon taking a 29-26 lead into the intermission. Neither team held larger than a four-point lead as Kenyon shot 44.4 percent from the field to the Tigers’ 27.6 percent.

The Ladies grabbed a five-point lead on two occasions in the third with the latter coming on Sharon Hull’s jumper with 6:28 left in the period. Melinda Franke’s layup off a Taylor Howard assist at the 5:16 mark cut the Kenyon lead to three before Maya Howard’s bucket on a break and subsequent free throw knotted the scored at 38-38 with 4:45 remaining.

Maya Howard added two more free throws just 37 seconds later to give DePauw the lead. Kenyon’s Sidney Cera countered with a three-pointer, but the Tigers scored seven straight starting with a layup from Blair Carlin before Maya Howard converted another three-point play and Kylie Morris finished with a layup from Maya Howard’s assist.

That run gave DePauw a 47-41 lead with 2:47 left in the third and the Tigers took a 52-47 lead into the final period.

Kenyon’s Ifeoma Archimalo opened the fourth with a three-point play before the teams exchanged baskets to make it 54-52 in favor of the hosts. Maya Howard hit two free throws and a jumper to start a 13-0 run that gave the Tigers a 67-52 advantage with 2:31 left and sealed the victory.

Maya Howard led the Tigers with 19 points, while Claire Ryan added 17 and three steals. Taylor Howard, Ryan and Sydney Kopp each grabbed seven rebounds, while Taylor Howard dished out four assists.

DePauw shot 36.4 percent for the game to Kenyon’s 37.0, but the Tigers outscored Kenyon from the line, 25-6.

Greencastle 63, North Montgomery 35 — At Linden, the Tiger Cubs jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and were never challenged in winning for the sixth time in seven games.

Jalyn Duff led the Tiger Cubs with 15 points, while Claire Gillen added 12 and Gracie Smith had 10.

Greencastle led 39-15 at halftime and 54-31 after three quarters.
