District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) will co-host the 2017 Indiana Military Veterans Legislative Day Monday, Jan. 23 at the Indiana Statehouse, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.

The Indiana Military Veterans Legislative Day Committee has announced that Rep. Baird and District 93 State Rep. John Bartlett (D-Indianapolis) will co-host the event, which begins with a veterans’ march to the statehouse at 8:30 a.m.

Rep. Baird, a Vietnam veteran himself, is scheduled to give a POW/MIA tribute at 9:30 and then join Rep. Bartlett for opening remarks at 10 a.m.

“This event gives military personnel and veterans the opportunity to interact with the legislative body,” State Rep. Baird said. “Lawmakers can meet with veterans to learn what issues are really important to them and what hopes they have for the state of Indiana.”

This year’s ceremony will feature speakers, presenters and members from veteran service organizations and associations, elected officials, and current military members.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb will speak at 10:30 a.m. and then greet veteran attendees.

The Indiana National Guard has coordinated assistance with the veterans’ march and event ceremony. Indiana Guardsmen from the 38th Infantry Division Band are scheduled to lead the march along with other reserve component members of the Indiana Joint Service Color Guard.

The Indiana National Guard has also scheduled static display vehicles along the route to the statehouse and is coordinating support inside during the ceremony.

Marchers will begin at the Military Park Gazebo, located near 601 W. New York St. The marchers will leave the gazebo area heading south on West Street, then west on Robert D. Orr Plaza toward the statehouse. The approximate walking distance from Military Park Gazebo is 0.37 mile.

Optional parking has been coordinated and will be free for the first 50 vehicles at the Riverwalk Parking Garage located just north of 250 Wabash St.

The Indiana Military Veterans Legislative Day Committee is a volunteer committee consisting of non-partisan, not-for-profit Indiana veteran service organization members, military association members, and is sponsored by Indiana multi-partisan legislative leaders.

The overall event is intended to open communication channels between Indiana Reserve Component and active-duty military members and military veterans and families with their Indiana state senators and representatives regarding military and veteran specific legislation moving through the Indiana General Assembly during the 2017 legislative session.
