Adam Wagner

The man who was shot by a Putnam County sheriff’s deputy last Thursday while allegedly pointing a firearm at another officer was arrested by Indiana State Police on Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers served a Putnam County Superior Court warrant on Adam Wagner, 35, of rural Greencastle, upon his release from Methodist Hospital.

The charges are related to a domestic battery investigation and the subsequent alleged pointing of a handgun at a deputy sheriff.

Troopers transported Wagner to the Putnam County Jail, where he was incarcerated on five felony charges: two counts Level 5 felony intimidation, Level 6 felony strangulation, Level 6 felony domestic battery and Level 6 felony criminal confinement.

At 11:18 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, Putnam County sheriff’s deputies Jeffery Freeman and Anthony Brown, along with Special Deputy Ian Zeffel, responded to a 911 call from Wagner’s girlfriend reporting a domestic disturbance at their home at 6400 N. CR 490 West, Greencastle.

According to the ISP investigation, deputies arrived at the home attempting to follow up on the domestic violence allegations when Wagner reportedly exited a southern lower level door suddenly and pointed a handgun at special deputy Zeffel.

Freeman immediately drew his weapon and ordered Wagner to drop his, at which time Wagner pointed the weapon at Freeman, causing the deputy to fire two rounds from his service weapon, striking Wagner in the torso.

Wagner had been undergoing treatment at Methodist Hospital since the shooting.

Upon examination by the ISP Laboratory Division, Wagner's weapon was determined to be a BB gun.

The female victim had signs consistent with a physical struggle and domestic battery. There were two toddlers belonging to the couple in the home and they were unharmed and released to family.

The lead investigator was ISP Det. Don Curtis. Assisting are ISP detectives 1Sgt. Jason Fajt, Don Anglin and Mike Featherling, along with Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office and Putnam County Sheriff‘s Office.

  • It is sad that they fail to mention it was a BB gun. Prays for Adam, his four children and family. ~🙏🏻~

  • Hithardbypesd--would you please tell me this: how is a police man supposed to know it was a BB gun in the dark? It did not matter if he had a BB gun, a water pistol, rubber band gun, etc, The police did as they are trained to do and I believe they did the right thing. Maybe Adam wanted to commit suicide by proxy?

  • Jail?? With his injuries?? I understand he was released from the hospital, so his critics will say he should go straight to jail, but what level of care will he receive incarcerated?? He has deep ties to this community...he's not going anywhere. He'll face and accept fair consequences. Anyone that really knows him, knows that. Too much, health wise, could still happen while his body is trying to heal. Wow, just wow!! Liability nightmare if something happens. Prayers for his 4 children and family. Prayers for healing.

  • donantonioelsabio- Nowhere in my statement did I say anything about the police! What I did say was they failed to mention it. Referring to the article!

  • kbmom--if Adam had not gone outside, according to the article, with what police thought was a gun, Adam would not in all probability been shot. No, he earned what he received.

  • Have we forgotten that 911 was called because he was abusing his girlfriend? Are you kidding me? Stick with the facts people:

911 was called because of domestic violence

He pointed a weapon at an officer

The hospital wouldn't release him if he still needed to be in the hospital. Our tax dollars will make sure he continues to get medical care while in custody.

I don't understand why we're feeling sorry for this guy?

  • @purefun....I guess I have better insight of the allegations and A mom who taught me not to judge a book by its cover.

-- Posted by kbmom on Thu, Jan 19, 2017, at 9:56 AM
  • He wouldn't be charged if there wasn't probable cause. I'm certainly not judging a book by it's cover - but you can deny the facts I listed above. And we have to ask ourselves - why in the world did he come out of his house with even a bb gun? That is simply asking for trouble.

  • Do all of you people think the banner is giving us all of the information? They are telling us what the police department told them. Most of us do not know Adam's side or the girlfriends side for that matter. We are getting an alleged version of events and as we all know PCSD has never lied to cover up an officers wrong doings. I have known Adam for years and this just doesn't seem like something he would do. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

  • Y'all have got to be kidding me!!!!! I don't care if he is the Pope! He pointed a GUN and TWO deputies - Officers of the Law!!!! He endangered his own life by pointing his gun (I don't care that is was a BB gun), it appears to be a gun. When he was ordered to drop his weapon, and didn't, he was shot. You are all making this guy sound like some sort of a saint, but lets remember that prior to this shooting, he beat the daylights out of his girlfriend! And that's ok? These deputies have families to come home to - and to me, that is more important than some jerk pointing a gun at someone he should be respecting! Your disregard and disrespect for the law, and the men and women that protect you are what is so wrong with this country! Oh, and exactly who are you going to call when your home is broken into, or you are needing life saving measures from an abusive boyfriend/husband, or get in a car accident and the guy leaves the scene because he is drunk? That's right - your friendly Law Enforcement Officers that risk their lives everyday for you ungrateful people!

  • No one is making him out to be a saint. We know what he did was wrong all I'm saying is we only know the officers side. I have many friends on the sheriffs department and I'm glad all officers involved are safe. However, I also know that there is more than one side to every story including this one. We only have one side. I for one am smart enough to wait until I have heard all of the facts from both sides before casting judgement.

    -- Posted by Burp1979 on Thu, Jan 19, 2017, at 11:45 AM
  • Who is casting judgement? That up to the jury and judge.

I'm simply saying you can't ignore the facts that we already know to be true. I'm shocked that we feel sorry for this guy.

  • I'm NOT disagreeing that he should be in jail. You do not know any facts. You know what is being reported by the paper. Do you know for certain what happened that night? Do you know what Adam did when he exited his house? Were you there? Did you witness any thing? I can assure the only people that know the facts for certain are not any of us. I do not feel sorry for Adam. I feel sorry for his family and his children who are reading and hearing the things people are saying without really knowing anything.

  • You are correct, there are two sides to every story. But to tell me, a complete stranger, that I do not know any of the facts, you are completely wrong. I do know the facts. There was a weapon brandished at the scene, recovered at the investigation. The investigation was completed by ISP, therefore PCSD did not cover anything up. If Adam has called PCSD out to his home previously, for the same or similar circumstances, then Adam and his girlfriend should not have been co-habitating and subjecting these children to the violence. Another fact that I know is that these officers have families to come home to, and is it fair that their daddies don't come home because some hothead fires a weapon and kills them? How do you think the families of these deputies feel reading and hearing the things people are saying about them without really knowing anything? How do you think they feel knowing that you aren't supportive of them when they risk their lives for each of you?

  • There is no doubt in my mind that this was not the first incident. I also know both Adam and the girlfriend. I'm sure there is more to this story than is being told. I'm sure his attorney is telling him not to say anything so right now all we know is what is allowed to be shared. There is a reason everything is alleged at this time.

  • I'm certainly not basing my opinion on a news story. However, police reports are public record - go check it out. The Prosecutor's office would not charge him based on something the Banner Graphic reported. There would have to be evidence. He has not been tried and convicted yet.

And if his toddler children are reading the paper then that's pretty darn amazing!

I sure wish people would have soft heart when it comes to law enforcement like they do when it comes to criminals.

  • 2 sides to every story? Yes! Correct! Without a doubt! But those who are bringing up the girlfriend and what occurred before he walked out with whatever type of gun he walked out with are insane. Did she put the gun in his hand and shove him out the door? If the answer is yes, then she is definitely more too blame. BUT, if he on his own picked up a weapon of any sort and decided to walk out that door and then point it at an officer then that is on him and him alone. No matter what happened beforehand!

Did the domestic violence that preceded the police showing up play a part into what occurred? Absolutely! That is separate from the shooting though. Is she too blame for some of what happened? Absolutely! Is he also too blame for some of what happened? Absolutely!

Example: I get into a fight at the local pub. Person I'm fighting with runs out door and calls police. I walk out of pub door with what appears to be a gun in my hand. Police tell me to drop the weapon. I don't do it and then I precede to point the gun at one or more officers. Police then fire their weapons shooting me. Is that the person that I was in a fight with earlier fault or is it ultimately my fault??

Bottom line..if you point a gun (50 cal, 9mm, shotgun, BB gun, toy cap gun etc. etc.) at a police officer then there is a pretty good chance you are going to get shot..it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

PS-The odds that those police officers went to work that day thinking I can't wait to get called out tonight so I can shoot someone are slim to none. Show them respect and they will show you respect.

  • God Bless our uniformed officers and all involved.

-- Posted by Nit on Thu, Jan 19, 2017, at 2:58 PM
  • Anyone else pick up on how the stories have changed? First reported story stated the officer shot Adam because he brandished a weapon at Zeffel. Now they state he pointed at both officers?? Hmmm...just thinking out loud.

-- Posted by kbmom on Thu, Jan 19, 2017, at 9:11 PM
  • Actually, that doesn't seem that strange. New details emerge during the course of a police investigation.

  • The idiot beats his girlfriend and then has a gun in his hand when he comes to the door with police outside.......GUILTY. He should not be allowed to run loose around other people.....lock his sorry *** up.
