CLOVERDALE -- Lilian Davis, a student from Cloverdale High School, has taken third place in creative writing at the 6th Annual Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Career Development Conference hosted by WorkOne on the campus of Ivy Tech Community College last Friday.

A total of eight students from Cloverdale attended the competition under supervision of Karl Turk, the JAG specialist hired in July and better known for his time as a coach for the West Oso High School in Tex.

At the recommendation of Principal Sonny Stoltz, the Cloverdale School Board unanimously voted to install the JAG program at Cloverdale High School last June. At that time, then Secretary Vivian Whitaker commented that she had encountered the JAG program in Pike County schools.

“The number of kids that they were able to place, after they graduate to go straight into a job, was quite amazing,” Whitaker said. “It’s a win-win in my opinion.”

The purpose of the program is to prevent at-risk students from dropping out of high school by providing them with a mentor and job coach. It also helps students develop the knowledge and skills they will need to successfully enter the workforce.

The event brought together about 130 JAG students from all of the programs in the region, including both Terre Haute high schools and Sullivan High School.

The students participated in various competitions, such as employability skills, financial literacy, career presentation, creative solutions, etc. to demonstrate the skills they have developed in the program.

Local employers and community leaders volunteered their time to serve as judges for the event.

The winner in each category will move on to compete in the State Competition on March 17 in Indianapolis.
