Nick Costin is a senior football and basketball player at Greencastle High School who considers sports as one of the most important things in his life.

Banner Graphic: What have sports meant to you and done for you?

Nick Costin: “I’ve been playing sports since I was a little kid and they are really important to me. I have learned to become a better leader for my teammates and my community. I have learned how to be a good teammate, and hopefully that will help me in my days after college in the workforce.”

BG: This year’s football season had to be the highlight of your career. How special was it?

NC: “Our biggest accomplishment was going from 1-9 to 9-2, which was the biggest turnaround in the state. We beat everybody we needed to beat, it was just the most fun I’ve had playing a sport in my whole life. The coaches made everything possible for us. They set up our practice plans, they did everything for us and literally made our lives easier by putting in those countless hours. We worked two or three hours a day for four or five days a week in the summer, and it was great to see it all pay off.”

BG: Basketball got off to a slow start, but it’s picking up.

NC: “[The football players] missed the first week of practice, and with a new coach it took us a while to figure things out. We have a much better idea of what we are supposed to be doing now. Hopefully we can make a good run in the sectionals.”

BG: What are some things you like to do that are not sports or school-related?

NC: “My family is a big hunting and fishing family, and I like to go deer hunting. I like to watch movies on HBO and Starz, and my favorite TV show is ‘This Is Us’. It’s kind of ‘girlie’, but it’s a really good show. I also like to go snowmobiling. I have my own snowmobile, and I’d like to go to South Dakota or somewhere up north and ride it someday. I’d love to go mountain riding in Colorado or Wyoming, somewhere like that.”

BG: What are your future plans?

NC: “I’m deciding on going to college between St. Joseph’s, Wabash, Earlham, Franklin, DePauw and Indiana Wesleyan. By the end of the month I hope to have my decision made and sign. Some schools want me to come and play quarterback, some schools want me to play other places. I’ll play wide receiver or anywhere they want to put me. I just want to play at the next level.”

BG: What career do you want to pursue?

NC: “I’ve changed my mind 100 times since I started thinking about this. I could see myself in 10 years being a doctor or something in the medical field. Maybe sports medicine or a family practitioner.”

BG: How would you rate your Greencastle school experience?

NC: “People say that time flies by in high school, and they’re right. I’ve had a great experience here, but I’m ready to go on to college and get my degree and then get into the workforce. All of my teachers have been great. My Spanish teacher [Sra. Wade] and coach [Mike] Meyer have both helped me a lot with everything. Coach Meyer has helped me a lot with this recruiting process.”
