Wrestlers, swimmers resume quests

Kyle Shaffer of South Putnam leads 13 Putnam County wrestlers who will compete today in the Mooresville Regional.

Shaffer, ranked No. 6 in the state by Indiana Mat, will open regional competition today against Grant Walker of Martinsville.

Shaffer is 39-0 on the season.

Other county wrestlers competing are:

Greencastle — Trace Thomas (152 pounds), Jacob Baker (113), Michael Anderson (138), Trae Carrington (145) and Jacob Meyer (170).

North Putnam — Shawn McLaughlin (126), Jacob Plessinger (160), Payton Patterson (220) and Bobby Phillips (285).

South Putnam — Tanner Pistelli (113), Clayton Maynor (126) and Nicholas Theis (182).

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the Evansville Reitz Semistate next weekend.

Swimming

Greencastle’s Grace Gillen will compete today in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events at the Avon Sectional, while Alex Fanning of South Putnam will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Gillen posted the third best preliminary time in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.81.

Gillen also had the sixth-best time in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:36.31.

Fanning had the fifth-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:14.47.

Those athletes finishing in positions 9-16 and competing in today’s consolation finals are Abigail Spencer of North Putnam in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyles, Cecelia Pohlar of Greencastle in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle, Evvie Timberman of South Putnam in the 50-yard freestyle, Kelly Hansen of Greencastle in the 100-yard butterfly, Abigail Meyer and Lavender Crockford of Greencastle in the 100-yard freestyle, Meyer in the 100-yard backstroke, Gabriela Louie of North Putnam in the 100-yard backstroke, Sydney Lewis of Greencastle in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Greencastle qualified all three of its relays for the finals (200 medley, 200 free and 400 free).
