Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 9:55 a.m. on Tuesday, a significant crash occurred at U.S. 231 and U.S. 36 when both drivers believed they had the right-of-way at the intersection.

Brandon M. Townsend, 32, Linden, was southbound on 231 in a 2000 Pontiac Sunbird. Jennifer D. Stapleton, 36, Kirklin, was westbound on 36 in a 2010 Chevrolet HHR.

Both Townsend and Stapleton told Deputy Matt Biggs that as they began to cross, the other driver failed to yield right-of-way.

Biggs could find no independent evidence to support or dispute either driver’s claim.

Townsend’s car hit the passenger side of Stapleton’s, causing airbags to deploy in both.

Townsend was tranpsorted from the scene by PMH Ambulance. Stapleton refused transport, saying she would seek alternate transportation to the hospital.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 6:35 a.m. on Tuesday, Mellisa A. Browers, 49, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 700 South approximately one-quarter mile east of County Road 560 East in a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero when she hit a deer.

Deputy Biggs estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 8:15 p.m. on Monday, Deanna D. Bishop, 18, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 275 East approaching a 90-degree turn to the west in a 2006 Jeep Liberty.

Deputy Jacob Harrington reported that Bishop was unable to properly execute the turn and ran off the road into the yard at 3997 S. CR 275 East. The vehicle then struck the east side of the house.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

Deputy Elizabeth Campbell assisted at the scene.

• At 4:05 p.m. on Monday, Lourrine M. White, 38, Brazil, was westbound on Rangeline Road just west of County Road 225 East in a 2007 Ford Focus.

White told Deputy Biggs that as she was negotiating a corner, a dog ran into the road and she swerved to miss it. The car left the south side of the road, hitting an earthen embankment.

The front end of the vehicle dug in, causing the vehicle to flip onto its top. White exited the car with no injuries.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to five dispatches.

• At 1:41 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to reports of a smoke scare that turned out to be steam emitting from the roof of DePauw University’s Harrison Hall. A caller initially reported an explosion had taken place, but a “pop-off” valve on the building’s furnace had blown and was determined to be the cause as nothing was found upon GFD’s arrival.

• At 9:48 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 1 E. Hanna St. The alarm was determined to have been set off unnecessarily and was subsequently reset by DePauw University maintenance crews.

• At 8:08 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to reports of a motor-vehicle accident at 90 S. Fillmore Rd. A vehicle had crashed into a power pole, causing only minor damage to the vehicle with no visible damage to the pole. No injuries were reported.

• At 4:12 a.m. on Thursday, GFD assisted the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department with the extinguishment of a structure fire at 9828 S. County Road 650 West. More than 1,000 gallons of water were used to put out the fire before returning to station. No other action was taken by GFD.

• At 1:39 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 280 E. County Road 300 South. Contractors were reportedly performing work on the building, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and the brazing of copper pipes unnecessarily set off the alarm.
