Thursday, February 9, 2017

The Greencastle area dodged a bullet compared to areas north of here Wednesday evening but still experienced its first snowfall of an inch or greater in more than 30 days.

Officially, it was 1.3 inches of snow recorded by Putnam County weather observer Diana Foust, making it the largest local snowfall since Dec. 13.

It was also the first snow of more than an inch in 34 days, or the first week of January.

The new snow means that winter 2016-17 has now produced 6.3 inches of snow locally. That’s more than 10 inches behind the normal winter rate. The average winter total for central Indiana is 25.9 inches.

February typically sees 6.5 inches of snow in this part of Indiana, while 2.6 inches of snow normally falls during March.
