GMS vocal, piano students excel

TERRE HAUTE -- On Saturday, Feb. 4, Greencastle Middle School vocal and piano students competed in the Indiana State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble competition at Terre Haute North High School.

There are five different groups that a student could enter in from Group V (easier music) to Group I (very difficult). Each solo and ensemble is graded in several different categories including intonation, tone quality, note and rhythm accuracy, interpretation, dynamics, and musicianship.

Points are awarded and final ratings given from gold to participation.

The results are as follows:

Group V

Gold Division -- Collin Short – vocal solo; Alice Takimoto – piano solo; Hunter Miller – piano solo; Boyd Ensley – vocal solo; Savannah Black – vocal solo; Anna Zellers – vocal solo; Caroline Sullivan – vocal solo; Olivia Headley, Brooke Boswell, Anna Zellers, Caroline Sullivan, Rudy Hagen and Kiefer Wilson – vocal ensemble; Rain Minartz, Andrea Pearson and Kaylin Kienzle – vocal ensemble; Lucy Butler, Samantha Funk, DJ Wells, Libby Hayes and Amanda Cady – vocal ensemble; Allie Purdue, Jadyn Wadler, Alice Howard, Savannah Black and Kasandra King – vocal ensemble.

Group IV

Gold Division -- Sid Cox – vocal solo; Sid Cox – piano solo; Ren Bannon – piano solo; Lauren Hopper, Emmy Huber and Makayla Rogers – vocal ensemble.

Group III

Gold Division -- Selene Seaman – piano solo; Amelia Mathis – vocal solo; Zoe Weltz – piano solo.

Group I

Gold Division -- Hannah Seaman – vocal solo.

Silver Division -- Selene Seaman – vocal solo.

In addition, Hannah Seaman will be competing in the State ISSMA contest later in February by virtue of her gold division rating at the district level.

Selene Seaman, Hunter Miller and Ren Bannon are students of Maureen Carkeek.

Alice Takimoto, Zoe Weltz and Siddalee Cox are students of Lori Miller.

Hannah and Selene Seaman are vocal students of Barbara Pare.

The GMS choirs are directed by Kathryn Dory.
