DePauw sweeps Oberlin; men overcome 21-point second-half deficit

OBERLIN, Ohio — Maya Howard scored 18 and Emily Budde added 12 as 14th-ranked DePauw University’s women’s basketball team improved to 23-2 overall and finished North Coast Athletic Conference regular season play at 15-1 following a 60-41 win at Oberlin.

The Yeowomen dropped to 12-13 overall and 9-6 in NCAC play.

The Tigers, top-seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament, host Wooster on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

DePauw trailed just twice in the opening period before rattling off six straight to close the opening frame with a 10-6 lead. The hosts were within one in the second at 12-11 before the Tigers embarked on a 12-2 run.

The Tigers led 24-15 at the break.

The Tigers scored the first six of the third to push the lead to 15 and they kept in double figures on the way to a 45-29 lead after three. DePauw hit 8-of-12 from the field in the 21-point quarter. Oberlin got no closer than 14 in the final stanza.

In addition to Howard’s 18 points, she added three steals to share the team lead with Claire Ryan. Budde’s 12 came on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Melinda Franke hauled down six rebounds.

Alex Stipano paced Oberlin with 14 points with Sarah Thompson grabbing six rebounds.

Men

DePauw 71, Oberlin 68 – The DePauw men’s basketball team trailed by as many as 21 and 17 at the half, but the Tigers found a way to steal a 71-68 victory over Oberlin on Saturday in their regular season finale.

Jack VandeMerkt scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior Luke Lattner followed with 19 points, and Andrew Kus had 11 points and five rebounds.

The Tigers shot 25-of-56 (45 percent) from the floor and was just 3-of-21 (14 percent) from beyond the arc, but their 18-of-21 shooting (86 percent) from the foul line proved to be the difference late.

Oberlin shot 42 percent (26-of-61) overall and 40 percent (14-of-35) from 3-point range but only attempted two free throws, making them both.

DePauw held an early lead, hitting one of their three 3-pointers to open the game. However, they went from leading 9-6 five minutes into the game to trailing 23-15 five minutes later.

Oberlin hit 10 of their 14 3-pointers in the first half to take a 42-25 lead, but DePauw took the 44-26 advantage in the second half.

DePauw started the second half on a 15-5 run and made their game-deciding run with 11 minutes remaining, going from trailing to five to leading by five with 2:14 remaining, which was a 16-4 run.

DePauw scored 10 points off the bench, 42 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers and forced 11 turnovers.

Oberlin had 40 bench points, 18 points in the paint, four points off turnovers and eight forced turnovers.

Oberlin falls to 3-22 overall and 2-16 in the NCAC. DePauw moves to 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the conference.

The No. 8-seeded Tigers will play at No. 3-seeded Denison on Tuesday.
