Two teams from the Area 30 Robotics Club -- consisting of (from left) Sarah Danner (SPHS), Kayley MacGruder (NPHS), Ruben Hinners (Instructor), Kaleb Warner (NPHS), D. J. Phillippo (GHS) and Nolan Maners (CHS) -- placed third in Saturday’s competition at Clay City High School. With this victory the teams are in first (MacGruder and Danner) and second (Warner, Phillippo and Maners) place for this year’s overall championship. This was the club’s third competition for the year, with one more set for April 8 at Martinsville High School. In November MacGruder and Danner took second at the first competition, and both teams captured second in December. “It’s a little different this year,” Assistant Director Chad Nunley said after the first contest. “Most of the time the students are controlling the robot ... This year the students build the robot, but they have to program it. The robot has to follow a course and then do one mechanical thing.”
