Behind only four of the largest schools in the state, DePauw University ranks fifth in a new Indiana college ranking, the 24 Best Colleges in Indiana for 2017.

College Choice, a leading authority in college and university rankings and resources, has published the listing, ranking the University of Notre Dame as No. 1 on the state list.

Purdue University is listed second, with Indiana University-Bloomington third and Ball State University fourth.

Praised for its faculty, atmosphere and student involvement, DePauw is fifth on the list. Wabash College, meanwhile, is seventh.

“DePauw is known for offering a top-tier undergraduate education in about 20 different areas of studies,” the listing notes.”It is also known for requiring a Winter Term from all students, which is used to either participate in internship programs, study abroad or field studies. In fact, 80 percent of all graduates study abroad by the time they earn their degree.

“The school also has a fantastic reputation for its faculty, which teaches all courses,” the study praises, adding that teaching assistants do not teach classes at DPU.

“Student life is punctuated by more than 100 organizations,” it continues.“These include drama groups, political organizations, Greek life, and student government. There are also festivals, lecture series and traditions that most of the student body takes part in each year.”

The ranking notes that Indiana “has a long and distinguished history in the educational field, which is evident to this day in its wide variety of high-quality colleges and universities, from large, public research institutions to small, private liberal arts colleges, and even the largest community college in the United States.”

College Choice developed its list by looking at academic quality along with return on investment — the differential between tuition costs and average early career earnings.

“This list not only represents the best educational experiences that the Hoosier State has to offer, but even some of the best educations in the United States,” Christian Amondson, managing editor of College Choice, said of the ranking. “Many of the nationally renowned college educations on offer Indiana can also be had at very inexpensive prices, as well. These schools do a good job of maximizing students’ return on investment.”

The entire ranking is as follows:

1. University of Notre Dame; 2. Purdue University-main campus; 3. Indiana University-Bloomington; 4. Ball State University; 5. DePauw University; 6. Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis; 7. Wabash College; 8. University of Southern Indiana; 9. Hanover College; 10. Butler University.
