Slow start hurts Tigers; Monnett earns two all-NCAC honors

OSHKOSH, Wis. – No. 11 DePauw struggled to contain the multi-threat No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, falling 64-49 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers fell into an early 9-0 hole and didn’t connect on their first field goal until six minutes into the game. However, when they got going they answered with a 12-0 run, cultivating by a 3-pointer from Emily Budde.

UW-Oshkosh then managed to take a 19-14 lead at the end of the quarter, after a 10-2 run in the final 2:26. The Titans scored the first eight points of the second quarter and outscored the Tigers 19-5 to take a 38-19 lead at the half.

The deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome. They cut four points into the lead in the third quarter, and both teams scored 12 points in the final stanza.

DePauw shot just 25 percent in the first half and ended the game at 35 percent (18-of-52). They shot 11 percent from 3-point range (2-of-19) and were 79 percent (11-of-14) from the line.

UW-Oshkosh shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the first half and finished at 44 percent (27-of-61). They were 35 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc and 60 percent from the line at 3-of-5.

Budde led the Tigers with 11 points off the bench. Senior Claire Ryan scored 10 and just missed on the double-double at nine rebounds.

Taylor Howard, Blair Carlin and Maya Howard each scored eight points. Taylor also pulled down seven rebounds.

DePauw was outrebounded 38-31 and outscored in the paint 36-20. DePauw outscored the Titans’ bench 21-20.

DePauw concludes the season at 27-3. It was their 16th straight season with at least 22 wins - the second longest active streak in Division III. They are also the seventh DePauw team to win at least 27 games in a season.

Track and field

Monnett records two seconds — At Oberlin, Ohio, Cloverdale’s Claudia Monnett had a pair of second-place finishes on Saturday as DePauw totaled 35 points and finished seventh in the women’s track and field indoor competition at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.

Monnett started with a runner-up in the mile in 5:08.10. She added a second all-NCAC accolade with a second in the 3,000 meters (10:16.87).

Kaitlyn Daanen turned in a fourth in the 60 meters (8.10), while Amanda Weber was eighth (8.25). The Tigers collected five points in the high jump as Emily Wilson was fifth (1.55m/5-1) and Elena Ponder eighth (1.50m/4-11).

Natalie Gruszka was fifth in the 800 meters (2:26.95) and the 4 x 400 relay of Weber, Gabby Coffing, Odessa Fernandes and Gruszka was seventh (4:25.67).

Last month, Monnett not only won the 5,000 meters at the Fred Wilt Invitational at Anderson University, but she broke a DePauw indoor record.

Monnett’s win came in 17:36.32 and topped the record of 17:49.92 by Leslie Dillon in 2006.

Tiger men finish fifth — At Oberlin, Ohio, DePauw wrapped up competition at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday with 71 points and a fifth-place finish. The 71 points were the Tigers’ most since beginning NCAC competition in 2011-12. Ohio Wesleyan won the title and Wabash was runner-up.

Saturday’s highlight was Jordan Booker’s win in the 400 meters as he crossed in 50.27 seconds. Dante Stewart was fifth in the event in 50.99 seconds.

Additionally, the 4x400 relay of Booker, Dante Stewart, Alex Rossebo and Johnny Miller broke the school record with a third-place finish of 3:25.18. That topped the converted mark of 3:25.24 set in 1969.

Nate Baker also earned all-NCAC honors in the shot put with a third-place showing (13.75m/45-1.5).

The Tigers’ 4x200 relay of Chase Wright, Luke Patty, Stewart and Johnny Miller garnered all-conference honors with a third-place finish in 1:32.54.

DePauw totaled nine points in the mile as Zach Batt was fourth (4:23.31) and Cole Martin fifth (4:24.44).

Picking up sixths were Booker in the 200 meters (23.10) and Paul Christian in the 3,000 meters (8:59.51). Wright was an eighth-place finisher in the 60 meters (7.21).

The Tigers open the outdoor season for both men and women on March 18 at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird meet.
