Cooking Up a Winner

The Area 30 Career Center culinary arts team is the new state champion in the Indiana ProStart/FCCLA Culinary and Management competition, sponsored by the National Restaurant Association, conducted Friday in Muncie. Besting 27 other teams from 15 other schools, Area 30 will move on to national competition in Charleston, S.C., at the end of April. Hoisting the trophy as the No. 1 team in the state are (from left) assistant instructor Kathy Cash, Caleb Basore, Tyler Smith, Zach York, Jonas Ray, Mikayla Campbell and instructor Mary Anne Birt. Students Basore, Smith, Ray and Campbell all attend Greencastle, while York is from South Putnam. The students created an entree of blackened talpia with fruit salsa and lime sour cream along with a farro vegetable medley. The appetizer was pan-seared maple leaf duck with sauteed shrimp in a spring roll, with deconstructed S’mores for dessert.
