Warren Township iron bridge closed until further notice

PUTNAMVILLE — The results of a recent bridge inspection has forced the immediate closure of a 127-year-old iron bridge in Warren Township.

Bridge 187, located on County Road 25 East, north of U.S. 40, closed Friday. County highway officials announced the bridge will remain closed for repairs until further notice.

County Highway Supervisor Mike Ricketts said the bridge was closed at the advice of the engineer performing the inspection.

Despite the bridge’s age — it is older than five of the county’s remaining nine covered bridges — Ricketts believes this will be a repair situation and not a replacement or a total rehabilitation.

“I honestly think it can be repaired to make it last,” Ricketts said.

Ricketts hopes the closure will be a matter of months, not years.

Built in 1890, Bridge 187 spans 112 feet across Deer Creek in central Warren Township.
