Cougars, Eagles claim middle school girls’ titles
ROACHDALE — North Putnam won the 7th-grade title and South Putnam claimed the 8th-grade crown last week in the Putnam County middle school girls’ basketball tournament.
In the 7th-grade game, North Putnam led 18-1 after one period, 22-6 at halftime and 28-14 after three periods before emerging with a 39-14 win. Brie Miller led the Cougars with 13 points, while Marin Davies added 10, Kyla Willis had seven, Camryn Wolf and Haley Stevenson had four each and Annabelle Gross had one.
South Putnam was led by Clampitt and Astelli with four points each.
The Cougars earlier had won the Eel River Tournament at Eminence.
South Putnam defeated Cloverdale in the first round of the 8th-grade tourney 49–7 and was led by Chloe Custis with eight points.
Bree Mahoney-Sutherland, Alex Steffy, Brionna Egold, Drew Steffy and Ava McHugh each had six points. Grace Burdge had five points, Macie Bumgardner scored four and Sadee Proctor had two.
In the championship game, the Eagles got out to a 8-2 lead in the first quarter and were up 16-2 at half. They were able to control the game the rest of the way to win 38–15. Proctor led the Eagles with 10 points, while Custis added seven points, Egold added six points, Bumgardner, Alex Steffy and Burdge each added four points, McHugh scored two points and Drew Steffy added one point.
South Putnam’s 8th-graders finished 16-2 on the season, winning the Eel River Tournament and the 8th-grade Middle School State Small Schools championship in addition to their county title.
