Nick Young is a senior swimmer at North Putnam.

Banner Graphic: How long have you been swimming?

Nick Young: “I started swimming in sixth grade, then I didn’t swim in seventh grade so I could try something else. I tried wrestling, and I didn’t like it, so I went back to swimming after that and I have really enjoyed it.”

BG: What other things do you like to do when you are not doing school work or swimming?

NY: “I’m involved in Boy Scouts, and I’m currently working on my Eagle project at Hope’s Way [near Groveland]. They have a small, Western-type town with many different buildings that is a recreation center for disabled children. They had a place to pan for gold and many other buildings but they didn’t have a bank. My uncle and I have been building a 12-by-10 foot bank for the kids to take their gold, exchange it for money and buy things at other stores. My mom is involved with special needs kids here at school, and through my involvement with Key Club we have done other projects out there every now and then. I’m glad I have the opportunity to do.”

BG: Do you have any favorite kinds of movies or TV shows?

NY: “There is a new show called ‘Designated Survivor’ that I like to watch. It’s about what could happen if all of our political people were killed in an attack, so we still have one political leader in charge.”

BG: Do you have any special skills?

NY: “I can do the pyramid Rubik’s Cube. Not very fast, but I can do it.”

BG: What kinds of pets do you have?

NY: “Two dogs and a cat. My dogs names are Buster and Bonnie, and they are Australian shepherd and chow mix. My cat’s name is Angel, and I don’t know what her breed is.”

BG: What are your college plans?

NY: “I am going to Wabash, and I have signed a national letter-of-intent to swim there.”

BG: What is your major going to be?

NY: “Math and accounting. I hope to be an accountant someday.”

BG: What is something you’d like to do that you have never done before?

NY: “I’d like to visit Europe. I went to England once, but I’d like to visit the rest of it.”

BG: Describe your high school experience at North Putnam.

NY: “It’s been great. I am hoping my English classes have prepared me for all the essays I’m going to write in college. It’s not my strong suit. Math has always been my best subject. I’m taking Calculus III at DePauw right now, kind of ironic since I’m going to Wabash. Having Calculus I, II and III under my belt will hopefully help me at Wabash.”
