HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Cubs sweep Eminence; Eagles off to 3-0 start

Sunday, April 9, 2017

EMINENCE – Greencastle swept a pair of baseball games at Eminence on Saturday, winning the opener 14-0 and the nightcap 5-4.

In the first game, Jackie Scanland led the way for the Tiger Cubs by going 2-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBI, and he also threw three innings of no-hit baseball with five strikeouts.

“He gave us everything that we expect of him this year,” Greencastle coach Ben Wells said.

Nick Costin added two hits for the Tiger Cubs.

“All throughout the lineup we hit the ball well,” Wells said. “Guys did a good job waiting back and taking good approaches at the plate. Defensively we were pretty solid. We had a couple of errors early but settled down and played well.”

Wells also applauded the performance of reliever Tanner Sanders.

“Tanner came in and pitched the last two innings,” Wells said. “He worked ahead in the count, kept the ball down and threw hard. I was very pleased with his outing. He was one of our brightest spots.

Jordan Meyer hit a double for Greencastle’s only extra-base hit, while Jacob Harris had two RBI.

Wells admitted the second game was “a little bit more of a struggle” for his squad.

“We jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, but then they did a much better job of keep our hitters off balance, and we just could not get much going after that,” he said.

Alex Johnson started for Greencastle on the mound in the second game.

“He gave us two really solid innings, and it was nice to see him bounce back and throw a good game,” Wells said. “Alex Costin and Gus Manion also threw two innings and really did a nice job. Gus did a great job of closing the game out for us. We were really in a tough spot and Gus came in and gave us two great innings, and really showed a lot of resolve and grit to help secure the win.”

Abe Wade and Alex Costin each hit a double for Greencastle, while Scanland, Trey Wood and Harris each hit a single.

Tiger Cubs placed fourth at Northview – At Brazil, Jake Bennett paced Greencastle with a 73 as the Tiger Cubs placed fourth in the Northview Invitational.

“That was an excellent score for Jake as he played very consistent considering the course conditions, which made for good scoring difficult,” Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said.

Jaxon Parmley added an 85, while Conner Taylor shot 87, Kyle Tesmer had a 100 and Brett Sosebee carded a 107.

“This was a good beginning for a very young and inexperienced squad, as only Jake and Jaxon have any varsity experience,” Paquin said. “Conner and Kyle played well for freshmen and Brett had a few high scores on some holes.

“This team will get better and will be a strong contender for conference, county and sectional.”
