Area 30 mileage team 4th

At 50 laps with 102 mpg, the Area 30 Super Mileage Team placed 4th in Class B at the Engineering/Technology Educators of Indiana Super Mileage Challenge hosted by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend. Assistant Director Chad Nunley announced during the Area 30 Governing Board’s Tuesday meeting that the Super Mileage Club had placed fourth in the Engineering/Technology Educators of Indiana Super Mileage Challenge hosted by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend.

The team consisted of Advisers Curtiss Davis, Ruben Hinners, Troy Anderson and Zane Earles; Driver Kaleb Warner (NPHS); James Crocker and Jeff Jurgens (CHS); Nate Hensley, Ragan Bax and Keaton Boswell (GHS); Grace Willard and Kayley McGruder (NPHS); and Devon Workman, Logan Jones and Matt Barnes (SPHS).

Making 50 laps with 102 mpg, the team “performed very well” in its third consecutive year of competition. The team placed in Class B (classes are determined by school size).

In other developments:

- Caterpillar plant: The board approved an overnight field trip to the Caterpillar plant in Peoria, Ill., for five senior Construction Equipment Operator students and their instructor, Scott Livesay, April 24-25.

-- Claims: The board approved claims at a total of $150,272.29, a decrease from last month of $26,219.93 and of $33,633.81 from the year’s average.

- Enrollment: Assistant Director Nunley reported that 396 students are enrolled for the 2017-18 school year with the possible addition of a few more. This year 360 students were enrolled.

- Perkins Grant: The board approved submitting an application for the 2017-18 Carl D. Perkins Federal Grant in the amount of $71,000. If awarded, the grant will be used for the Director of Student Services, licensed practical nurse (LPN) trainers, student and staff mentor and professional development.

-- Personnel: The board approved the hiring of Zane Earles, also a computer systems networking instructor at Area 30, as a part-time summer maintenance and technology support employee.

-- Senior Recognition Program: The 2017 Senior Recognition Program will be May 11 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the York Auto Family Community Building at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

The next Area 30 Governing Board meeting is scheduled for May 9 at 9 a.m. at the Area 30 Career Center.
