North Putnam sweeps Eagles in track

Friday, April 14, 2017

North Putnam swept a pair of high school track meets from South Putnam on Thursday evening.

The Cougars won the girls’ meet 104-50 and the boys’ meet 49.5-44.5.

In the girls’ meet, North Putnam’s Emily Gasho won both the shot put and discus, while freshman Josie Lyons won both the 110 and 300 hurdles.

South Putnam’s Aubrey Barker won three individual events, taking firsts in the high jump, long jump and 200-meter dash, and was also a member of the winning 400-meter relay team.

North Putnam girls’ coach Kevin Lutes was happy with his team’s win.

“Our girls performed well, especially for it being the second meet in three days,” he said. “Josie Lyons was frustrated with her high jumping, but came back and won both hurdle races. She really held her own.”

Lutes thought Gasho and the other throwers and jumpers gave his team a nice start.

“As usual,” he said. “Our runners really kept that momentum going. We’re looking forward to getting back at it on Monday.”

South Putnam girls’ coach Brandon Welti thought his team did well despite not yet being at full capacity due to injury.

“We still have a few girls limited on events for injury prevention, and a few competed in off events,” he said. “Despite this, the girls’ team still did a great job of competing.”

Welti praised Barker for her outstanding night on the track.

“We’ve not spent much time working on long jump, and she still came out and just barely missed the school record,” Welti said. “She had a season-best in the high jump and the 200, and she was also on the 400m relay team that won.”

The relay team — which also included Lois Cheatham, Ally Nichols and Chelsie Edwards — didn’t know they would be working together in that event until the day before the meet.

“Despite little work on handoffs, that relay team did a great job and surprised themselves,” he said.

Edwards had a really busy day, running the 3,200-meter relay, 400-meter relay, 400 and the 1600-meter relay.

“Chelsie did a great job closing the 400-meter relay and then turning around and running a strong 400,” Welti said. “I was really pleased with her effort as well.”

Senior Lois Cheatham is a runner that Welti foresees improving a lot in the coming weeks. “We’ve tried to ease her in to things and limit events, mainly to prevent another stress fracture from occurring like last year,” he said. “With this being her last season, she’s been really focused and working hard. My challenge is to not overwork her.”

Welti is confident his team is moving in the right direction.

“Even though we lost, overall I’m really pleased with how we performed,” he said. “Hopefully the confidence they’ve gained from their individual successes will propel them to continue working hard and improving.”

In the boys’ meet, Dillon Binnion of North Putnam won both the shot put and discus, while Scott Proctor of the Cougars won the 110 hurdles and the long jump.

Cougars third in triangular meets— North Putnam finished third in a triangular meet on Tuesday.

Monrovia won the girls’ meet with 78 points, while Southmont had 46 and North Putnam had 42.

Emily Gasho won both the shot put and discus for the Cougars

“Although I wish we could’ve picked up a few more points for second, I was happy with most of our performances,” North Putnam girls’ coach Kevin Lutes said. “Our throwers and jumpers helped out greatly in getting us off to a strong start. We just need to sustain that momentum throughout the rest of the meet.”

The Cougars had some key athletes recovering from injuries, but still performed well.

“We just can’t rush their recoveries,” he said. “That’s not to take away at all from the girls’ efforts. I felt like everyone gave their best.”

In the boys’ meet, Monrovia won with 64 team points while Southmont was again second with 57 and the Cougars had 45.

The Cougars won the 4x100 relay and also got a first from Payton Patterson in the discus.

“We came up a little short but overall a very good night for our guys,” South Putnam boys’ coach Nathan Aker said.

“We had numerous personal bests throughout the night with plenty to work on going forward. I’m very proud of how our guys competed and how they continue to improve daily.”

Christian Zeffel placed second to Gregory in both jumping events.

“All of our throwers continue to improve,” Aker said. “Colin Adams jumped into the discus event and was able to bring home a third place finish. Baseball

South Putnam 8, Covenant Christian 5 — At Indianapolis, the Eagles improved their record to 6-0 with a win over the Warriors on Thursday evening.

Dylan Wood had two doubles, a single and an RBI for the Eagles, while Hunter Croan had two doubles, a run and an RBI and Lance Bush added a single, double, two runs and an RBI. Kody Britton added a double and a sacrifice fly.

Croan and Jon Hodge combined for the pitching victory.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of this baseball team at South,” Eagle coach Brady Rhodes said. “We have battled through tough situations this entire early part of the season and have figured out ways to come out on top every game. This game was no exception.”

Rhodes considers Covenant Christian as one of the more talented baseball programs the Eagles have on their schedule.

“They went toe to toe with us, and you have to applaud the professionalism of their coaches and the skill of their players,” he said. “It was good for us to have our mettle tested like this right before county.”

Rhodes likes his team’s mental fortitude early in the season, especially with having several young players in key roles.

“We play with a relaxed but focused confidence that is hard to describe, but easy to see if you watch our team play,” he said. “These guys just believe they are going to hit, believe they can get people out on defense, and believe they can rally when they need to. For how young we are, that’s very encouraging to see.

“I fully attribute this to my senior leaders and the amazing coaching staff around me here at South,” Rhodes added. “We are very encouraged by our start and expect great things this season.”

The Vikings led 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth before the Tiger Cubs pushed two runs across to get on the board. West Vigo added five more in the top of the fifth to break the game open for good.

“Again I am pretty pleased with how we played,” Greencastle coach Ben Wells said. “We have opened the season with a pretty tough schedule and I have been pleased with how we have competed. West Vigo is a very good team and in these two games against West Vigo we have shown a lot of fight and competitiveness — which is all I can ask for.”

Jordan Meyer had two singles and an RBI to lead the Tiger Cubs at the plate, while Gus Manion had a single and an RBI and Jacob Harris added a single.

“The girls really played well at West Vigo,” Greencastle coach Kevin Rowe said. “West Vigo had a very good team. We brought a much higher intensity level than we had previous matches and supported one another from start to finish.”

Rowe is pleased with how the team has progressed already this season.

“We are starting to truly come together as a team,” he said. “The new varsity players are really making an impact and taking the pressure off the veteran players.”

Linton 196, Cloverdale 204 — At Linton, the Miners got a 41 from medalist Zach Hall and defeated the Clovers.

Drew Boyette led Cloverdale with a 43, while Zach Nichols shot a 46, Zarek Wellington shot a 57, Wyatt Helterbrand shot a 58 and Tyler Harrison added a 59.

“We were not in sync for most of the round,” Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. “Drew did some very good things, but had a few glitches. Zach had a bad stretch of holes that negated some pretty good play on the others.”

Wokoun hopes his team will learn from its mistakes and improve as the season goes along.

“We struggled hitting greens and put ourselves in some difficult situations,” he said. “We will take our mistakes in stride and move forward. We are capable of much better golf, and we just have to find a way to bring that out.”
