Baseball sectionals drawn; weather allows some action

Pairings for the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s baseball state tournament were drawn on Friday.

At Danville, Greencastle (4-11) will open Class 3A Sectional 27 by meeting defending champion Indian Creek (6-5-1) on May 24 in a rematch of last year’s championship game, followed by the host Warriors (10-5) against Indianapolis Washington (0-6).

At South Vermillion, first-round matchups are Cloverdale (5-8) against Southmont (7-8), South Vermillion (13-2) against Monrovia (6-8) and South Putnam (8-5) against defending champion Rockville (9-7).

North Putnam (5-11) drew a first-round bye and will meet the Southmont-Cloverdale winner.

In weekend baseball action:

Crawfordsville 11, North Putnam 1 – At Crawfordsville, the hosts got four runs in the first inning and five more in the second to take control early.

Hayden Rudes and Jack Kendall had the lone hits for the Cougars, while Evan Davies had the only RBI and Kendall scored the Cougar run.

Southmont 13, Greencastle 2 – At New Market, the Mounties and Tiger Cubs played to a scoreless tie through three innings before Southmont scored at least three runs in each of the last four innings to pull out the victory.

Gus Manion had two hits and scored a run for the Tiger Cubs, while Nick Costin had the other Greencastle hit and Jordan Meyer scored the team’s other run.

Crawfordsville 13, North Putnam 5 – At Crawfordsville, the Cougars and Athenians were tied at 4-4 after five innings, but Crawfordsville came up with seven runs in the sixth to break the game open.

Bailey Osburn had a double and a triple with two runs and two RBI to lead the Cougars at the plate, while Jada Stump was 2 for 4, Emma Haste was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI and Mia Runnells had a hit and an RBI.
