New tool available for low-vision readers at PCPL

Saturday, May 13, 2017

Putnam County Public Library has acquired a new digital video magnifier to assist patrons who have difficulty reading normal-sized print.

The MagniLink Zip, located upstairs in the computer lab, replaces the traditional magnifying glass with a digital camera and a 17-inch high definition monitor to help low vision patrons see newspapers, books and magazines.

The new magnifier provides an anti-glare surface, an X/Y table, and the ability to change the brightness, contrast and magnification strength. There is an on-screen display that guides the user through all control functions, and a control panel with tactile buttons and knobs that is easy to operate.

Funding for the low-vision reader was provided by Putnam County Public Library in conjunction with the James F. Elrod Fund and a donation from Al and Cindy Little from funds awarded them by the Putnam County Community Foundation.

Library Technology Director Michael Acsbok will be giving a demonstration of the new digital magnifier at a meeting of the Living with Low Vision support group from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Putnam County Comprehensive Services, located at 630 Tennessee St., Greencastle.
