Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday, Clayton V. Morlen, 21, Brazil, was eastbound on State Road 236 headed toward Roachdale in a 2010 Ford Escape when he hit a deer.

Morlen told Deputy Robert Soilleux that three deer ran across the road and he avoided the first two but hit the third.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

• At 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Perry B. Bennett, 76, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 700 South just east of U.S. 231 in a 2003 Honda Accord. Jarrett S. Curran, 18, Cloverdale, was westbound in a 2003 Jaguar S-type.

Both drivers told Deputy Jacob Harrington the other was left of center and they sideswiped one another.

Harrington found no evidence supporting either driver’s accusation.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 2 p.m. on Monday, Thomas D. Setser, 58, Danville, was exiting a farm field in eastern Putnam County onto U.S. 40 in a 2006 Volvo semi tractor pulling a trailer. The vehicle is registered to Co-Alliance.

A disabled 2007 Saturn Aura registered to Austin Anthony of Greencastle was parked on the westbound shoulder.

The right rear tires and fender of Setser’s vehicle struck the left rear of the disabled vehicle. However, Setser told Capt. Tom Helmer he was unaware of the impact until passing by the same spot later.

He then reported the mishap to Co-Alliance and company officials notified Putnam County dispatch after 3 p.m.

In the meantime, Helmer had notice the abandoned vehicle and tried to contact the owner. No working number for Anthony could be located.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 10:25 a.m. on Monday, Demetrius L. Cooper Jr., 26, Lafayette, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2015 Freightliner tractor pulling a trailer.

Capt. Helmer reported that the roadway was under construction and had flagmen at each end of the construction zone in addition to numerous warning signs. All traffic was having to pass through the area in the eastbound lane.

As he was westbound in the eastbound lane, Cooper’s truck, which is registered to Venture Logistics, apparently crossed over the center line, striking the right front of a “Brole Broom” construction vehicle owned by Mileston Contractors LP, Lafayette.

The broom was parked in the westbound lane. The impact pushed it into a Wirtgen Group W 2101 milling machine owned by C. E. Hughes Milling Inc., Jeffersonville.

Neither vehicle was occupied at the time of the collision.

Tire marks indicated that Cooper locked up the brakes about 30 feet before impact.

Cooper complained of shoulder and hand pain and was taken to Putnam County Hospital by Operation Life.

The semi had to be towed.

The broom assembly and steps of the broom machine were destroyed but it could be driven from the scene.

The electronic controls of the milling machine were destroyed and it was loaded on a trailer and taken from the scene.

Damage was estimated at $50,001-$100,000.

Assisting at the scene were Deputy Jacob Harrington, Indiana State Trooper Johnnie Myers and the Fillmore Fire Department.

• At 5:50 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, Nathan K. Williams, 23, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 just south of County Road 1100 North in a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Williams initially told Deputy Harrington he was unable to see in front of his vehicle and traveled off the road, making front-end impact with the guardrail on the east side.

The vehicle came to rest in a field on the southeast corner of 231 and 1100 North.

Williams later said he was trying to avoid a collision with several deer in the road.

Neither Harrington nor Deputy Virgil Lanning could find evidence of evasive braking or swerving on the road.

Williams was only able to provide an expired insurance policy.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.
