Micaela Cancilla Park to be dedicated Thursday evening

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

The City of Greencastle's newest park will be dedicated Thursday evening in the city's South End.

Micaela Cancilla Park -- named in memory of the late Micaela Julletta Cancilla, who died Oct. 5, 2012 at age 26 -- will be dedicated in a 7:15 p.m. ceremony at the park that has been developed behind Mama Nunz Restaurant at 800 Main St.

The ceremony will be conducted prior to the Greencastle Board of Park Commissioners' June monthly meeting, which is set to begin at 7:30 at Mama Nunz. It is open to the public.

In addition to an update on Cancilla Park, the agenda includes updates on the Robe-Ann Park bandshell project and introduction of a park facilities roof replacement project.

In June 2014, the Park Board voted unanimously to name the then-undeveloped eastern section of Maple Berry Park in honor of the Micaela Cancilla, the daughter of Nunzio Cancilla and the granddaughter of Jo Ruth Cancilla (Mama Nunz herself).

Mama Nunz noted that Micaela worked enthusiastically alongside her family at the restaurant and immensely enjoyed interacting with customers.

"She knew everybody who came and went," Jo Ruth Cancilla told the Park Board at that 2014 meeting. "She spent a lot of time at the restaurant."

The back door of the restaurant overlooks the park area to be dedicated in the name of the young woman who enjoyed it even in its undeveloped state.

Mama Nunz had earlier presented the Park Board with a petition accompanied by 16 pages of signatures calling for the naming of the park in Micaela's memory.

  • How about a picture for those of us who no longer live there?
