City Police

One driver’s unfamiliarity with the streets of Greencastle reportedly led to a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon.

The mishap occurred at 12:21 p.m. at the intersection of East Washington Street and North College Avenue.

Richard Mann, 52, Danville, was eastbound on Washington Street, driving a 29016 Ford F-350, Capt. Chris Jones reported, when a 2001 Hyundai, driven by Stephanie Sharpie, 27, West Lafayette, pulled into his path from College Avenue.

Sharpie said she was unfamiliar with the area when she stopped at the intersection heading southbound. Assuming it was a four-way stop, Sharpie then pulled into the path of the Mann truck, police said.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Capt. Jones was assisted at the scene by Chief Tom Sutherlin and Officer Nick Eastham.

Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated a pair of recent property-damage crashes.

• At 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, a pair of semi tractors collided on U.S. 231 near the westbound on-ramp to Interstate 70.

Joseph A. Allcock, 30, Cloverdale, was southbound in a 2009 Kenworth registered to Pyles Transport of Columbia, Ky. Paul F. Sanders, 50, McCrory, Ark., was northbound in a 2017 International registered to Needham Trucking of McCrory.

Allcock told Deputy Jacob Harrington he was preparing to turn onto the eastbound I-70 on-ramp at the next intersection when the other semi failed to stop, turning west and making side impact with his tractor.

Sanders told Harrington he saw that Allcock had his left turn signal on and believed he was preparing to turn left at the intersection. However, there is on left turn for southbound at the intersection in question.

Responders cleaned up a fuel leak at the scene and Allcock’s tractor-trailer had to be towed.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, two vehicles, a trailer and a boat were damaged in a reported sideswipe accident on State Road 243.

Charles R. Byrd, 35, Fillmore, was southbound entering a curve in a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. Byrd told Deputy Kyle Gibbons his brakes went out, causing his truck to cross the center line.

In doing so, Byrd’s truck sideswiped a northbound 2005 Ford Expedition driven by Richard T. Gearinger, 49, Greencastle.

After sideswiping the SUV, Byrd’s truck continued into the boat trailer Gearinger was pulling, colliding with the left front of the trailer.

Gearinger’s vehicle suffered moderate damage to the left side but was driven from the scene. The trailer suffered extensive damage and was towed. The boat suffered minor damage.

Byrd’s vehicle was disabled in the accident and was towed.

Damage was estimated at $25,000-$50,000.
