In an effort to inspire students in the philosophy of strengthening their community, the United Way of Putnam County put out a challenge to sixth-grade art students to create thank-you note covers for the organization.

“We were in need of a great design to reproduce as a cover for the official United Way of Putnam County thank-you cards,” Joe Buser, executive director of the local United Way organization, said.

He said the United Way decided to challenge “our talented students to assist in our effort.”

“If we could find a way to foster a lasting awareness of and appreciation for public service and philanthropy in Putnam County, and have a new design for our cards, we all win,” Buser said.

Buser and his team leader, retired school teacher Joanie Knapp, asked county sixth-grade art teachers Amy Robinson, Renata Hendrickson, Janelle Cole and Holly Cooper to inspire their students to come up with a design for the UW thank-you cards.

A winning representation from each school was chosen by the UW Board of Directors to grace the 2018 UW campaign thank-you notes.

Winning designs were created by Haley Timcheck of Greencastle; Dunkin York of South Putnam; Audrey Fagg of Cloverdale; and Elle Jones of North Putnam. “We thank the teachers and students of the Putnam County schools for their inspired participation,” Cathy Tipton, president of the UWPC, added.

Students received gift cards from Conspire Contemporary Crafts located on the Greencastle Square.
