TERRE HAUTE — For North Putnam’s Max Haste and several other players, Saturday’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game had many purposes.

The game was a great way to stay in shape, keep that football mentality going strongly and to face tougher competition in preparation for the start of college practice later this summer.

The Marian-bound Haste and the Gold Division team exploded for 20 points in the second quarter to take the lead for good in a 26-14 victory.

“It was fun,” Haste said. “Playing with the guys, and getting to meet new people. It was a great week.”

Haste is a tight end by trade, but found himself split wide on several plays in the game.

“I didn’t get a lot of catches, but it was a fun game,” he said. “I wasn’t out of breath; I think I was in pretty good shape. I’ve been running in a lot.”

Haste will play in the Indiana North-South All-Star Game at Indianapolis North Central on July 14, and reports to Marian on Aug. 1.

“I’m excited,” he said. “I’m just going to be working out and running until then.”

Haste and longtime teammate Jackson Kendall were joined on the winning Gold Division team by Cloverdale grads Noah Duby and Zeb Holder.

The game’s individual offensive star was Northview’s Dylan Hyatt. The future DePauw Tiger caught five passes for 74 yards and scored two touchdowns in the deciding second quarter.

One of those scores came on a two-yard run, and the other on a 33-yard pass from Brody Donsbach of Cumberland (Ill.)

Hyatt was named the game’s outstanding player and received a $500 scholarship.
