Cloverdale School Board approves annual financial report

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale School Board approved the 2016 annual financial report in a 6-0 vote during its recent regular meeting.

Daniel Hofmann abstained because he had not been able to read the document before the meeting.

“This is a report that is required by Indiana Code to be submitted by the school corporation,” Superintendent Greg Linton said.

Assessed values, which determine how much the school can receive from taxes based on local property values, dropped $629,569 from last year to this.

Total student enrollment was 1,227, with sophomores being the largest class (110 students) followed by the third grade (100). According to Indiana State Board of Education, the school receives about $6,000 per student from the state.

Receipts (moneys received) totaled $12.3 million ($325,524 less than approved by the State Board of Accounts), while expenditures totaled $12 million ($900,000 less than approved). The largest payment was to WV/WCI School Trust (employee health insurance) in the amount of $996,389.93 followed by the IRS in the amount of $431,476.63.

The highest administrative salary was $108,725 and the lowest was $77,083.

The average salary received by teachers with a bachelor’s degree was between $35,000 and $39,999, while those with a master’s generally received between $60,000 and $64,999.

The varsity football coach received the highest extracurricular salary at $6,011, followed by the girls’ head basketball coach at $5,885 and the weight room coach at $4,776.

Total corporation indebtedness was about $13 million, with school bonds, used for structural improvements to the buildings, being the largest portion at $9.3 million.

In other developments:

-- Barbara Petro: Superintendent Linton expressed condolences to the family of Barbara Petro, who had served on the school board for 19 years (1987-2006) and recently passed away.

“We should keep her family in our thoughts and prayers,” Superintendent Linton said.

President Whitaker added, “She certainly served that township very well for many years.”

-- Bus drivers: The board approved the school bus drivers’ employment agreements, which had no changes from last year.

-- Claims: The board approved claims at a total of $663,497.89, an increase from last month of $1,701.78 and a decrease from the year’s average of $74,199.05.

-- Personnel: The board unanimously approved the following personnel report:

-- Hire: Donald Shelton (CMS/CHS ag teacher, CMS FFA adviser), Dana Daub (CHS special education teacher) and Kami Hyde (guidance counselor), Tom Winders (varsity head football coach), Tyler Lotz (volunteer assistant football coach) and Denis Flory (bus driver).

-- Resignation: Beth Sewell (CHS guidance counselor).

-- Family Leave: Shanon McGuire (CES custodian, bus driver).

“I’m glad that Mr. Flory has come back to us,” President Vivian Whitaker commented.

Superintendent Linton said, “I would like to welcome Mrs. Hyde to Cloverdale Community Schools. We welcome her from Martinsville. She came very highly recommended. I’d like to publicly thank Mrs. Sewell for all her hard work for many years. I know she was a staple at the high school, and we wish her well as she transitions to Owen Valley High School.”

-- Technology: The board approved declaring some technology equipment surplus. The hard drives have been removed and destroyed, and the equipment will be sold to a scrapper.

The Cloverdale School Board’s next regular meeting will be Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverdale Schools administration building.
